Marking their Teritory

Johannesburg boutique design agency, Teritory, is a circle of thinkers who use their smart ideas to brighten up interior spaces.

Experienced interior architect, Ricci Camara, and branding, packaging and design expert, Deryn Lange, joined skills in 2008 to provide aesthetic solutions to branding design and interior architectural fields in one integrated package.

“Teritory offers a full interior design service. This ranges from the supply of custom-made individual items to turnkey design projects. We offer our clients a professional design service from concept to execution,” says Deryn.

VISI spoke to Teritory to find out more about what they do. In the process, we learnt more about the ins and outs of custom wallpaper….

Can you explain how you use custom-designed wallpaper prints as a design technique?

Creating custom-designed wallpapers allows us to work with individual styles to create inspiring spaces.  

How do you go about choosing the right images/designs?

Our wallpapers are translated by a brand, a concept or the surroundings. For example, the wallpaper series we designed for Jackel Creek Golfing estate reinforces the connection with nature.

Can you explain the process of turning images into wallpaper? 

Once a concept has been established for the interior, our designers create custom patterns or work with photographic mediums to create a print. The print is then applied to a 3D rendering of the interior to determine the size and scale of the wallpaper. This visual reference gives the client a realistic impression as to how the finished product will look in the space.

How should one go about deciding on a feature wall?

We believe interiors should have large white spaces with accents of strong colour or patterns. A feature wall can be used to break up a surface and create a point of interest.

When is wallpaper a good idea?

When a space needs inspiration and energy.

Wallpaper is always a good idea!

Wallpaper has been a major decor trend for years. Where do you see it going in the future?

Until now, people have been limited to use wallpapers only for accent walls. However, the trend forecast for the year 2011 is completely different. You can expect entire rooms or even cabinets and ceilings to be dressed in wallpaper.

Any designs or motifs that are especially hot at the moment? 

Geometric forms and curves, adventurous design styles and scene setters are hot at the moment.
