Madiba in Pop Art style

Inspired by Andy Warhol’s silkscreen images of Marilyn Monroe, Mick Jagger and Mao Zedong, artist Beezy Bailey has paid tribute to Nelson Mandela in an interesting way.

Using photographs by Bob Gosani and Benni Gool, Beezy Bailey has for the last year been working on a series of paintings using photographs in silkscreen format.

The exhibition not only celebrates the icon that Nelson Mandela has become; it also celebrates the liberation of South Africa through the use of images portraying other heroes such as Joe Slovo.

The paintings have a transcendental quality, and are rich in layers and colours.

Titled Icon Iconoclast and on display at the Everard Read Gallery, this exhibtion is sure to bring out the patriot in you.

The exhibition will run from 5 May – 16 June 2011.
