Kinetic Table Plants

Viennese designers Mischer’Traxler created a cool kinetic installation (featuring an oak table covered in plants that disappear as you approach) as part of the Ephemerā installation at Design Miami 2014.

“It’s an interactive kinetic installation,” says Thomas Traxler. “If you are at a far enough distance from the table it starts ‘blooming’. But if you come too close the table flattens out.”

The design was created for Perrier-Jouët. The tabletop features water jet-cut metal elements in a laser-cut surface. Ultrasonic sensors around the table detect movement and each element on the tabletop is connected to a motor concealed beneath the table that governs the movement of the plants and insects.

“The species used on the table are all related to real species,” says Thomas. “Some are extinct and some are common plants found all over the planet. So it’s also about the impact of humanity on nature.”
