Inside Etsy’s Sustainable HQ

WORDS Ashraf Booley IMAGES Garrett Rowland

Prepare to experience some serious office envy when you see the new headquarters of online marketplace Etsy in Brooklyn, New York.

After nearly three years of toiling away, Etsy’s striking new headquarters – designed by Gensler – has finally been realised. The decidedly sustainable space is located in Brooklyn, New York and is home to nearly 500 (lucky) employees.

Etsy’s new home features vibrant interiors and vivid hues with a mix of eclectic accessories. The eco-friendly space is said to be “a celebration of the art of making”, which is reflected throughout: from the local handmade furniture to the colourful murals adorning the walls.

Each of its nine floors has a kitchen where employees are encouraged to recycle and various spaces dedicated to individual work, meetings and group presentations. One of its most impressive areas is the rooftop terrace – a communal gathering space starring breathtaking views of the city.

To further up the green factor, Etsy uses LED lighting and makes use of solar panels, as well as a rainwater storage system installed on its rooftop. Other design concepts include embracing nature and using locally-sourced, sustainable materials. In addition to this, telling Etsy’s story through a narrative journey was also key in its redesign.

Word has it, the kitchens are packed with snacks on each floor. Talk about office perks!
