The sound of the ice-cream man’s tune still sparks nostalgia in most of us. Problem is, we would rather skip the artificial attack of the soft-serve and rather just hang onto those precious memories.
Not anymore though folks. A super South African design collaboration, The Soft Machine, has brought soft-serve back, looking and tasting better than ever.
Kobus van der Merwe of Paternoster’s famed restaurant Oep vi Koep has teamed up with Thingking’s Lyall Sprong and Marc Nicholson and Radio’s Brad Hodgkiss, Byron Meiring and Gert Schoeman; the new illustration, design, type and iconography collective, to bring inventively and naturally flavoured soft-serve to Design Indaba (and beyond).
Debuting today at Design Indaba, The Soft Machine will be “twirling” Leipoldt’s Milktart and moerkoffie flavours from their 1960’s Gypsy Caravan, which was transformed by Thingking. Using Radio’s beautiful illustrations Lyall and Marc turned the caravan into a mobile machine that will strike the eye first and the taste buds later.
See you there.
