WORDS Malibongwe Tyilo
Since starting their photographic blog I See A Different You in 2011, the Soweto-raised trio, made up of twins Innocent and Justice Mukheli and their childhood friend Vuyo Mpantsha, has gone from strength to strength.
Their widescreen photography started off with a focus on Soweto scenery, where they would shoot images of themselves dressed in fashion inspired by their grandparent’s style. Their main aim throughout the process was to retell the Soweto story, as well as share their positive story simultaneously.
The past two years has seen them land a major campaign with retailer Markham’s, exhibit their photography in places as far as Tokyo, and shoot images in various African countries. Most recently, they’ve partnered with whisky brand Grant’s, a collaboration that saw them shoot images of a selection of creative South Africans for a nationwide touring exhibition. We caught up with them for a brief chat about this fascinating exhibition.
How did you go about choosing your subjects?
We were looking for talented and passionate South Africans that are working together and standing together to achieve their success.
What were you looking to capture in each subject?
We wanted to capture a slice of their personality in one picture, a picture that makes the viewer feel closer to the subject.
Are there specific areas you’ve chosen to select your subjects from?
The project focused on subjects from Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg.
Where has the exhibition toured to, and where will it go?
From Cape Town, it was off to Durban and finally Johannesburg on 6 November 2014.
