Handmade harmony

Furniture and instrument designer Murray Kuun has two new musical offerings.

The “designer of things”, who has been creating furniture since the 80s and instruments since the 90s has recently released the ‘Elemental Bass’ and a philanthropic guitar entitled ‘Get our rhino out of jail’.

“The Elemental Bass is really an extension of an electric guitar I designed and built a few years ago called Modena,” Murray says. And while the Modena was more futuristic Murray says with this new design he was trying to achieve an earthy “African modernism”. “That was the main motivation behind the Elemental design, it is also built from all-African woods,” Murray says.

According to the designer “bass players are possibly the only musicians who are open to new design ideas, most other musicians are very conservative in their choice of instrument,” and this influenced his decision to specifically create a bass.

What most South African’s are open to, however, is saving our rhinos. Murray has just released his handmade ‘Get our rhino out of jail’ acoustic guitar. The design is 100% South African, using local woods and local sentiment, and will be auctioned via email. All proceeds of this guitar will be donated to various rhino preservation organisations.
