Gunjan Aylawadi’s Paper Carpets

WORDS Michaela Stehr IMAGES Gunjan Aylawadi

Indian artist Gunjan Aylawadi, based in Sydney, Australia, makes intricate carpets and installations out of paper.

These extremely detailed works take precision and a lot of dedication, not only due to the repetitive nature of the process, but the delicate nature of the medium used too. The process consists of cutting and curling thousands of tiny paper strips, which are then glued in a pattern to form a tapestry.

“What I enjoy most about making my work is the experience people have when they look at it,” she explains on her website. “They stop for a moment to have a closer look and the moment turns into long minutes of being fascinated by the beauty a simple medium like paper can add to the work in front of their eyes.”

The results are mesmerising visual 3D patterns.
