Cape Town-based creative studio MUTI has unveiled its latest experimental project, Glazed & Confused, a vibrant collection of conceptual ceramic vessels.
The imaginative series initially began as an experiment – a chance for MUTI’s illustrators to explore new ideas and techniques. “We regularly create studio briefs that allow us to experiment with ideas and creative styles,” explains Brad Hodgskiss, Co-Founder & Creative Director of MUTI. “Glazed & Confused grew out of one of those experiments, where we used our 3D rendering skills to bring our artwork to life in the digital realm.”
Despite the diverse range of illustrations and designs, the shared setting and consistent lighting give the ceramic pieces a sense of cohesiveness. “We kept things loose and let everyone run with whatever inspired them or sparked their interest. Sometimes, you have an idea that’s been sitting in the back of your mind, just waiting for the right moment to bring it to life,” says Brad. “These studio briefs are the perfect time to try them out.”
“It’s always a challenge in a studio with 16 illustrators, but from the very beginning—13 years ago—we decided to embrace individual strengths and let each person follow their own creative,” he adds.
Working digitally gave the team total creative freedom and the ability to pivot on designs if necessary, which they wouldn’t be able to do if they were working with traditional ceramic vessels. “It gave us the flexibility to tweak, refine, and even completely reimagine our illustrations until we were satisfied with the final result,” Brad explains. “We’re always experimenting and pushing ourselves to create and explore our styles and this project is a perfect example of that”. | studiomuti.co.za
