WORDS Mary Garner
Girma Berta is an Ethiopian graphic designer and photographer known for his Moving Shadows collection of cut-out street photography portraits depicting working and elderly people on the streets of Addis Ababa.
The portraits are captured with his iPhone before they’re extracted and set against colourful, digitally designed backgrounds.
Girma has been awarded a Getty Images grant meant to support photographers who use Instagram to showcase lesser-known communities throughout the world.
“Through my work on Instagram, I wish the world stares into the eyes of a face of Addis Ababa, the city where I was born and where I grew up,” says Girma. “The beautiful, the ugly and all that is in between.”
His work is on display at the new Addis Fine Art (AFA) gallery in Ethiopia.
