Fibre Designs’ handcrafted Verandah Collection is made to weather all seasons.
When Pierre Antoine, designer and owner of Fibre Designs, and interior designer Leanne Fairweather saw a gap in the market for hardy outdoor floorware, they decided to launch a range of all-weather crocheted rugs, pillows, pouffes, ottomans, sun loungers and banquettes.
“What was available [here] was mostly of European origin and therefore all but unaffordable,” says Pierre. “The Verandah Collection is proudly local.”
After the clothing manufacturing industry experienced a decline in Limpopo, Fibre Designs launched an empowerment training project in the region, calling on the talents of local crafts-women to weave and crochet their creations. “We’re fortunate to have an on-going project, which is progressing with much success,” he says. “The Verandah Collection is now being exported to the UK, Europe, Hong Kong and the Indian Ocean islands, and can be found in a multitude of private residences and lodges throughout southern Africa.”
There are two ranges in the Verandah Collection, Robala and Benya, which are both made using Fibre Designs’ locally developed and dyed WeatherTech yarn. The Benya range is silkier to the touch and is suited to (wet) covered or indoor areas, and the Robala range has been manufactured to withstand the elements. “It is mildew-resistant, naturally water-repellent, UV-resistant and exceptionally hard-wearing,” says Pierre.
