Exhibition Macabre

There’s something quite compelling about antique taxidermy and we’re finding ourselves quite taken with it at the moment. If you feel the same, don’t miss Exhibition Macabre at The Haas Gallery in Cape Town.

It all started in 2010 with Johannesburg interior designer Tessa Proudfoot’s extraordinary exhibition of all manner of curiosities – from an old travelling trunk to stuffed flamingos and a lion skin. And, as predicted in VISI 52 (December 2010), the taxidermy trend is still gaining momentum.

Jump on the bandwagon by scouring antique shops and junkyards for those trinkets that look like they’re from great-grandad’s archeological treasure trove. It’s a look that also works in a contemporary context.

And if you need inspiration, pop in at Haas before 22 July. The Exhibition Macabre is a showcase of work that links art and the preservation of life after death. Beauty and death collide with a sense of nostalgia and curiosity in an exhibit by Blue Duiker Taxidermy and photographers Gabrielle Guy, Frank Ellis, Mareli Esterhuizen and Francois Irvine.
