Durban delight

Durban’s warm ocean and fiery curries aren’t the only things that make it a leisure seeker’s paradise. The new Nonna restaurant at Makaranga Lodge is one more stop you have to make when visiting the Zulu kingdom.

The contemporary Italian bistro and deli is at the heart of the revamped 30-acre venue in Kloof. And while it embraces modern style there is also a huge focus on the magical surrounding gardens. Panoramic views over indigenous forest and traditional Japanese gardens set the scene while a newly crafted Chatres-inspired labyrinth and enchanted garden have been created to enhance guests’ experience.

Visitors have the option of dining in Nonna, which has been conceived by veteran Durban restaurateur Peter Cocorozis, where Victorian warehouse décor opens onto an extended deck covered by a pergola that allows you to enjoy fresh Mediterranean cuisine while taking in the garden views.

If you wish to spend time in the garden itself you are invited to select an indulgent picnic basket from the deli stocked with locally produced charcuterie, cheeses, breads and homegrown culinary delights.

Other options include wine tastings, cocktails, sundowners, coffee or gourmet teas while enjoying the view from the deck or retreating to the stylish but relaxed library bar.

Makaranga is an excellent choice for families. Children will be mesmerised by the enchanted garden, where gigantic boulders await good old-fashioned boulder hopping and a true Faraway Tree fitted with swings, loops, bars and climbing ropes begs for exploration.

The Makaranga portfolio also includes luxury accommodation, a state-of-the-art conference centre, unique wedding venue and an indulgent spa.

If you like surprises, Makaranga provides them at every turn with an enviable art collection that ranges from the largest private collection of Shona sculptures in the country to prized paintings and sculptures by celebrated African, European, Asian and American artists.

A feast for the eyes and the taste buds, Makaranga is a must visit.
