DIY designer lamp

Make a special hurricane lamp or two with Evian’s designer water bottles.

Evian teams up annually with fashion designers to produce limited-edition bottles that become the ultimate dinner-table accessories and collectors’ items.

Christian Lacroix designed the 2008 edition, followed by Jean Paul Gaultier in 2009 and Paul Smith in 2010.

If you are an Evian drinker you have probably built up quite a collection of these gorgeous bottles and don’t know where to store them – after all, recycling or throwing them out simply isn’t an option.

Unfortunately reusability is limited as chic Champagne stoppers don’t fit the openings. So, we have come up with a great way to keep them on the dinner table by simply slicing off the bottoms and turning the bottles into hurricane lamps to hold tea lights.

Do it yourself with a glass-cutting kit (available from hardware stores) or find a glass-cutter in the Yellow Pages to do it for you.

Have at least two holes drilled into the base, just above the cut, to allow air to flow through and keep the tea lights burning. We created feet for our lamps with grey plastic wall plugs (R9,90 for 30 from Builders Warehouse).

TIP: If cutting the glass yourself, bear in mind that the edges are dangerously sharp and should therefore be polished for safety reasons.
