Cup-a-character

WORDS: Remy Raitt

With the motto “act nice, eat well and always remember to be kind”, ceramist and illustrator Hannah Hughes ups the feel-good factor around the dinner table with her BeKind range.

Born in England and based in Johannesburg, Hannah is as crazy about drawing and illustration as she is about spreading cheer. Her unmistakable characters can be found squiggled on commissioned artworks or agency walls as well as on her range of quaint ceramics.

“Drawing has always played an important role in my life. I work with a lot of different mediums, but with fine bone china it goes a lot further as people will actually use them as functional pieces or as decoration. It makes it that little bit more special. I personally love to eat and drink out of pretty crockery.”

Her fan base seems to agree. BeKind pieces are quickly snapped up at the Neighbourgoods Market and Nap store in Johannesburg, while Facebook fans are constantly following up on new designs and ceramic pieces.

Hannah’s spare time is equally split between drawing and drinking tea, and each doodle is dependant on her mood. “My work depends on how I feel at that particular moment. Whether I’m happy or sad, my colour usage or line width clearly reflects in the expressions on my characters’ faces. Everything gets a voice.”
