Each year in April more than 300 000 design lovers flock to Italy’s fashion capital for the legendary Milan Furniture Fair – and this year MyTyd joined them.
The Milan Furniture Fair, also known as the Salone Internazionale del Mobile, celebrated its 52th anniversary with a strong focus on innovation. The myriad of designs were presented in different halls: Euroluce entailed 38 000 sqm of designer lights, Salone Ufficio was all about furniture and beautiful designs for the office, while 700 young designers strutted their stuff at Salone Satellite – watch the great highlights video below to get just a small taste of the scale of the event.
Representatives of the Cape Town’s World Design Capital 2014 team promoted South Africa’s design talent at this year’s Fair. Milan even had a shop, CapeBest, selling only products made in the Mother City. Even renowned designer Tom Dixon noticed this: “There are so many South Africans this year!”
If you missed this year’s Salone, you’ll be happy to know that seven of Italy’s top design brands – Moroso, Gervasoni, Tonon, Potocco, Domitalia, Frag and Fornasarig – will form part of an exhibition in Cape Town at the end of May. The exhibition takes place from 28 to 31 May at Youngblood in the Beautifull Life Building, 70 to 72 Bree Street, Cape Town. Opening hours: 10am to 5pm.
