We really think Church is one of the coolest shops in Cape Town. Aside from its superbly curated selection of gifts, the storefront on Spin Street regularly changes its façade and interior according to the creative whims of its owner, design superstar Peet Pienaar of The President.
Recently the entire storefront was infested by hundreds of kiddies’ stickers (the type my sister collected when she was ten years old). But now the Church team have shaken things up again with an interior and window display resplendent in gold. Amidst the idiosyncratic selection of insanely covetable items – ranging from imported magazines to designer fragrances to post-war West German ceramic mugs – the walls of the shop have been clad in gold foil, pinned with cardboard buttons. In typical Pienaar style, the idea is simple and cheap, but the result is magnificent and entirely unique. If you haven’t visited Church already, it’s definitely worth a visit. Stop for a coffee and some delicious food at Milk & Honey next door while you’re at it.
