Astrid van der Heim

INTERVIEW: By Lee Thorn & Carine Visagie

Johannesburg interior decorator Astrid van der Heim thrives on a creative challenge and is the mastermind behind many successful renovations. Here she shares some her valuable insights.

How long have you been practising as an interior decorator?

A lifetime….

Which project over the span of your career did you enjoy most?

I’m fortunate that I can truly say that “variety is the spice of life”. Each project holds its own laughter and tears, with great rewards.

Do you work mainly in South Africa, or do you also work abroad?

I have done work overseas, however, due to the nature of the services that I offer, I prefer to work here and party elsewhere.

Which part of your job do you enjoy most?

Although I love the process of change, it’s always great going back a few weeks later and seeing how the space and clients have become part of each other as if I had never been there. It’s most rewarding knowing that my vision has made the difference to the clients’ lifestyle.

What are you currently working on?

An office building refurbishment and a few family homes that are ready for an update.

What makes for a good design brief?

Clients who know what they want.

How do you bring out the best from builders and workmen?

Respect and patience.

How do you satisfy both the client and your own design sensibilities?

Communication.

What are the key considerations for a place to have renovation potential?

Good bone structure.

What is the easiest, most effective measure to create change?

Paint.

What is the most common renovation mistake?

Bad planning.

What is the key to a contemporary makeover?

Less is much more.
