Ashley Wood

WORDS: Rozanne Engel

Cape Town artist Ashley Wood has shown that beyond a tragedy lies beautiful art that expresses a journey of remembering, recollecting and reorganising.

After being diagnosed with epilepsy at the age of 15 and undergoing brain surgery, Ashley Wood started exploring the idea that art can act as a form of therapy – a realisation she now expresses through her unique art works.

From painting with Betadine, knitting hair into string and making her signature sculptures from gauze swabs, Wood’s art is strongly based on the healing process.

“My art is my story and my explanation of how I worked through my epilepsy,” says Wood. “I specifically want to express and focus on acceptance and how people can accept the situation they might find themselves in.”

Since graduating from the Ruth Prowse School of Art in Cape Town last year, Wood has successfully exhibited her gauze-swab sculptures at this year’s Design Indaba Expo in Cape Town.

“The Design Indaba was a great experience and has created a lot of interest in my work. I definitely want to make my artwork affordable but also unique and exclusive, and bring it into people’s homes.”
