Akie Nakata’s Painted Stones

WORDS Lindi Brownell Meiring IMAGES Akie Nakata

Japanese artist Akie Nakata paints realistic animal portraits onto stones.

Akie never alters the shape of the stones she finds, rather she sees an animal in the shape and works with the natural curves to create her mini works of art.

Using stones as her canvas is something she takes very seriously. “To me, stones are not simple materials or canvases for painting pictures on,” she says on BoredPanda. To me, completing a piece of work is not about how much detail I draw, but whether I feel the life in the stone.”
