The Tokara winery in Stellenbosch is playing host to an exciting contemporary exhibition of six of South Africa’s most well-known sculptors, which hopes to invite questions about 3D thinking.
Conrad Botes, Marco Cianfanelli, Jacques Dhont, Brett Murray, Phillip Rikhotso, Lyndi Sales, Claudette Schreuders and Egon Tania are displayed under one roof, alongside pieces by Sydney Kumalo, Edoardo Villa, Edward Zwane and others.
Presented by Julia Meintjies Fine Art, the “Thinking A-Round – Mapping Sculpture” exhibition sees tongue-in-cheek combinations of art that pay tribute to South Africa as an incubator of 3D thinkers. At a time when art collectors are often most interested in sculpture, this exhibition serves as a reminder that the ancient language of this art form remains contemporary, and that South Africa has a reputable past in the medium.
Most of the exhibited artists were born during the 1960s and 1970s, and it goes without saying that their work has played a vital role in debates about South Africa’s recent complicated social history. From Cianfanelli’s laser-cut sculptures and Tania’s carved wooden figures, to pieces by Kumalo and Rikhotso, the exhibition offers an informative look at South African contemporary 3D art.
The exhibition runs until 29 February.
