Street art is moving inside next weekend as Worldart hosts an exhibition of street art inspired paintings by Ricky Lee Gordon (aka Freddy Sam) and Paul Senyol called Urban Aesthetics.
From 20 August to 3 September, the Worldart gallery on Church Street will see four paintings, one by each artist and two collaborations, up on its walls. The urban aesthetics by the two well-known street artists will add a flavourful dash of city culture without the underbelly grit often associated with street art.
Although Ricky Lee Gordon’s work can be spotted splashed across walls within the Woodstock bounds and as far afield as Gambia and New York, the opportunity to see his work on canvas is a rare one.
Paul Senyol is perhaps better known for his work as a mixed-media artist and has participated in a number of group exhibitions here and abroad. A lesser-known fact is that his work can also be found on the streets of Cape Town. Paul’s work is strongly influenced by popular culture, particularly skateboarding and punk rock, and this raw edge can be spotted within his more formal art pieces too.
Both artists have recently returned from sojourns abroad – Ricky from a mural-painting project in Los Angeles and Paul from a residency in Finland. With them, they bring fresh ideas and perspectives on urban art.
The exhibition opens at 10am on 20 August at 54 Church Street, Cape Town.
