Along these City Streets

Industrial and urban scene painter Mary Visser will be exhibiting a collection of striking paintings entitled ‘Along these City Streets’ at AVA in Cape Town later this month.

“In these new paintings, I reflect on Cape Town city centre architecture as witness to the lives that pass by,” Mary says. “Through these glimpsed views of blocks of flats, shop windows, car salesrooms, tarmac and traffic, I seek to explore themes of security, heritage and belonging.”

Mary endeavoured to express this concept in a fluid way: “It’s the act of painting itself that excites me. Here the image becomes a backdrop to the gestural sweep, the graphic mark, and the blobs and smears of colour.”

It’s in seeking a tension between the illusionistic space and the surface of paint that Mary hopes to encounter the shared urban experience. “I wish to locate something beyond the image and beneath the surface – a flash of movement in the stillness of a buildings’ façade…”

Perhaps you too will encounter this shared experience – on the streets of Cape Town and upon viewing Mary’s  works of art.

The exhibition, in association with Spier, runs from 16 May to 10 June at the AVA Gallery, 35 Church Street, Cape Town. www.ava.co.za. 021 424 7436
