Neill Wright at Salon91

Be sure to catch Neill Wright’s solo exhibition “Protect your Roots” before 19 March at Salon91 Contemporary Collection in Cape Town.

The exhibition seeks to put forward the reality of the South African political, social and cultural zeitgeist, and how the theoretical concept of forfeiting individual autonomy for the benefits of the governed state has sadly been distorted.

By incorporating numerous sources and addressing various problems, Neill Wright has taken a step back from trends of specificity and narrow subject matter, and created a panoramic view of the matrix of difficulties that South Africans face.

The use of irony in “Protect Your Roots” not only makes the South African truth more palatable, but in doing so, creates an uncomfortable space in which we, as observers, are caught between being saddened and amused.

Super-imposing the South African political landscape onto the rugged terrain of the American Wild West, as well as using the lexicon of 1930s American mafia culture, cannot be more fitting for creating a space in which the observer is forced to make up their own mind.
