Big 5 Sculpture Series

WORDS Lindi Brownell Meiring

Jaco Haasbroek’s Big 5 sculpture series has to be the perfect gift for any child. And if you consider yourself a bit of a kid too, there’s no shame in buying a set (really).

These wooden sculptures (painted with acrylic) are made to order. The colours are based on South African bank notes and the price of one sculpture is R380 (R200 + R100 + R50 + R20 + R10) excluding postage and packaging.

“I’ve been sitting on this idea for a while,” says Jaco. “I wanted to make a big 5, literally. A big 5 that I could place in different locations. ‘Have you seen the Big 5 in the city?’ was the basic idea. It seemed like a concept that could be extended into a couple of different channels, so I decided to also include the animals, and that it would be best to start small and develop the idea as I go along.”

“I tried to keep it as simple as possible by treating them almost like pixelated versions of the wooden souvenirs that you see for sale at most craft markets,” he adds. “I would still like to make bigger versions of them, possibly to be used as furniture.”
