Drawing inspiration from the Mexican Dia de Los Muertos (day of the dead), Fiona Kruger designed the beautiful skeleton watch.
Fiona’s watch is a reinterpretation of Mary Queen of Scotts’ 17th century skull watch. The uncanny pocket chain watch had a dropping jaw, which revealed the case and watchwork inside the ‘brain’ of the skull.
Intricately crafted, with as much thought and symbolism put into the design, Fiona’s ‘Memento Mori’ watch is entirely handmade. Unlike the Queen’s watch, each piece forms part of the movement, making the mechanics visible.
The solid silver casing is shaped like a skull and houses carved, laser-cut and polished components made of gold, rhodium, and plated brass. A blue steel dial adds to the personality of this one-of-a-kind piece and Fiona managed to capture the mortality of watchmaking brilliantly; in case the watch should break, its owner could witness its ‘lifetime’ run out.
