Porky Hefer

What three words encapsulate South African design for you?

Ingenious, unsupported, underappreciated.

What effect do you think the title 2014 World Design Capital will have on Cape Town and South Africa as a whole?

I am worried it will have a similar effect as the World Cup. Lots of talk, little action. It needs to go beyond the committees and the inner circle.

The politics worries me; we tend to use these things to do what should have been done years ago, rather than doing things that break new ground.

Who is your style icon?

Amakrwala and the Sapeurs of Congo.

What is your favourite building in South Africa?

Swazi and Zulu huts.

What is the one must-see spot in South Africa you recommend to tourists?

The Richtersveld or Baviaanskloof.

If you could live anywhere in the world for a year, where would it be?

On a desert island.

What do you love most in your life?

My wife and what comes from my brain.

What is your greatest extravagance?

Time to think and draw.

Where would you like to retire?

I will never retire.
