Yesterday was a pretty big day on the design calendar in Cape Town. VISI 59 was released, Design Indaba commenced, and the Woodstock Foundry celebrated its launch in conjunction with the Southern Guild ReCollect exhibition.
The Southern Guild initiative identifies and brings together iconic and innovative design pieces from South Africa’s creative industries. Making its debut at the Joburg Art Fair in 2009 Southern Guild received an overwhelming response, both publicly and critically, for the diverse and original collection of design products inspired by nature. In 2012 the initiative is stronger than ever. Curated and directed by Trevyn and Julian McGowan, the current Recollect exhibition brings together the best of the last three years, showcasing some of the most distinguished names in South African art and design under one roof… well, several roofs if the truth be told – the collection is housed throughout various spaces in the labyrinthine Foundry building on Albert Rd.
Artists and designers featured in the show include Gregor Jenkin, Haldane Martin, Dylan Lewis, Heath Nash, John Vogel, Bronze Age, Conrad Botes, Brett Murray, James Mudge, Lyall Sprong, Porky Heffer, Ceramic Matters, Nic Bladen, Pedersen and Lennard, Angus Taylor, Guy DuToit, Wayne Barker, Life, Ronel Jordaan, Koop, Dahla Hume, House on Fire, Dokter and Misses, Laduma Ngxokolo and many others.
The final result is visually spectacular and massively inspiring, truly affrirming the wealth of creative talent in this country. If you only manage to drag yourself to one exhibition this year, we recommend that this be the one.
The Recollect show will be on at the Woodstock Foundry from 1-11 March 2012.
