The third Toffie Pop Culture Conference and Festival is taking place at the Cape Town City Hall from Friday 30 March to Sunday 1 April.
Toffie Pop is a three-day conference-festival and will focus on contemporary popular culture, design, music, magazine publishing, art, sound design and everything else that entertains and distracts us, all in one space. A record number of more than 60 of the world’s best designers, artists, musicians, film directors, magazine editors and publishers have been confirmed as speakers and exhibitors. The conference line-up includes:
- Penny Martin (UK): Editor-in-Chief of The Gentlewoman (one of our favourite magazines)
- Roel Wouters (The Netherlands): Film director/designer
- Omar Sosa (Spain): Art director, publisher and graphic designer of Apartamento magazine
- The Mingarro brothers, Juan and Alejandro (Spain): Brosmind Studio in Barcelona
- Malibongwe Tyilo (SA): Fashion buyer, scenester and blogger (skattiewhatareyouwearing.blogspot.com)
- Athi-Patra Ruga (SA): Well-known performance and contemporary artist
- Chris Bisset (SA): Film director
The organisers will also be honouring the competitive spirit of the imminent London Olympics with a cosmopolitan creative showdown – a laptop Olympics, if you like. Six teams from Argentina, Switzerland, the Netherlands, the UK, Spain and South Africa will compete in a series of challenges scattered throughout the festival. (There may even be a dance-off.)
The teams are as follows:
- Spanish team: Alex Trochut, Michele Angelo, Xavier Manosa and Dvein animation studio
- Dutch team: Annelys de Vet (Head of design at Rietvelt Academie in Amsterdam), Nina Folkersma, Hannes Bernard, Guido Giglio, Noor van Eekelen, Ruben Pater, Sengyong Moon, Stefan Schaefer and Yuri Veerman

- South African team: Smiso Zwane, Zamani Xolo, Paul Shiakallis and Manti Ribane

“We’re aiming to create an international design network, a platform to expose SA designers to the best international talent. It’s all about making connections and doing better work through engagement. Our Small Talks and workshops facilitate intense skills and knowledge exchange,” says Peet Pienaar, creative director of The President and organiser of Toffie Pop.
Make sure you don’t miss out on the fun and the chance to forge some real connections with many of the world’s top creatives over three jam-packed days. You’re bound to come away with something – ideas, inspiration or just sore feet from dancing at the big closing braai and party on Sunday.
Tickets are R750 and give you access over all three days to the conference, Small Talks, all exhibitions, and the market and food hall. Workshops are an extra R250 each and space is limited to 20 people, so you need to be quick to get a ticket.
We can’t wait!
Tickets and workshop bookings can be done at toffie@thepresident.co.za or http://pop.toffie.co.za/tickets/
