Modelled on the Mother City’s wonder of the natural world, this two-seater couch is also a chaise longue and a side table.
Called the Table Mountain City Bowl bench, it was initiated and designed by Design Afrika’s Binky Newman, with Beverley Smart, and took three weeks of hard work by six women from the Du Noon Urban Weavers project to get the couch ready.
The city council-funded initiative hopes to stimulate the use of the twining stitch used by Xhosa women to weave traditional ingobozi (baskets) in the Eastern Cape among migrant craftswomen in the Western Cape.
