Recycling belongs to yesterday. Instead of sending the old and the used to the jumble sale, give them a new, designer life.

The latest global craze is to sew together old threadbare carpets, creating a luxurious patchwork floor covering. We spotted this fabulous over-dyed version at Paco in Greenside, Johannesburg, and thought it was a brilliant way of giving new life to tired old Persian rugs that have been relegated to the back of the garage.

Unless you are an excellent dye-master, we suggest you call in the professionals for the colouring job. Try your local drycleaner for some pointers. And, finally, if you’re going to dye, go bold! Forget safe and opt for vibrant colour or fade to black.
