Smart Idea: Contained Light

Use six salvaged plastic crates to light up and add an interesting focal point to any area in a few easy steps.

You need

  • 6 discarded plastic crates
  • 24 long cable ties
  • 1 roll of double-sided tape (18mm x 33m)
  • One 20m roll of wax paper
  • Stanley knife
  • 6 illumination holders
  • 5m Norse cable (1,5mm)
  • 6 Eurolux energy-saving light bulbs
  • 1 plug

How to

  • Decide on your light’s shape (we chose a cross) and tie the crates together with cable ties, using two per side. Stick strips of tape around the inside top of each crate just above the handle cut-outs (do not remove the top strip until you are ready to stick down the wax paper).
  • Line each crate with wax paper to diffuse the light. Beginning at the inside top of the first crate, remove the strip on the tape and stick down the starting point of the wax paper. Now roll it down to the bottom of the crate and score it before rolling the paper across the bottom, where it should be scored again before you take the roll up to the top and stick it down on the inside. Cut off the wax paper with the Stanley knife.
  • Continue with this process through the remaining crates.
  • Lastly, cut wax paper pieces for the other visible panels and position these with the double-sided tape.
  • Clip the illumination holders onto the Norse cable, spacing them so that every crate has a light bulb. Use a cable tie to secure each light bulb to each crate.
  • Switch on! Your light can stand on a table or be fixed to a wall.
