From neutral colour palettes to versatile furniture and smart storage solutions, learn how to create a fun, sustainable environment that lasts.

Design tips for kid’s room, it may seem like a simple task, but choosing a decor scheme that won’t be outgrown too quickly is tricky. You want your kids rooms to be fun and happy spaces, but gone are the days where one can afford to redecorate through each phase of growth. Here are some simple tips for setting up a sustainable environment to bring up your little ones.

  • So, you’re pregnant. Do not get too romantic with the idea of baby pink or baby blue. Choose a neutral colour palette such as white and cream, khaki and green, navy blue and red. Or even be daring and go with neon colours. These are sure to last the test of time and, if you’re lucky, could even set the stage of baby bliss to teenage pad.
  • Stripes, spots and shapes are the way to go. Trust us butterflies, flowers and teddy bears will not be appreciated past pre-school!
  • Versatility, multi-purpose and storage are what it’s all about. Every large piece of furniture for the baby room you invest in should be adaptable to your child’s shifting needs. The baby-changing unit should transform into a Lego display cabinet or slash soccer kit cupboard. Do not give in to those pleas for a Ferrari-shaped bed and rather go for a classic single or double bed. You can change the covers and cushions to reflect his/her developing interests over the years. And, most importantly, everything should be machine-washable.
  • Don’t be tempted to go “mini” when it comes to furniture. Baskets and boxes can be used to contain those teeny baby grows on standard-sized cupboards and shelves.
  • There are so many storage solutions on the market. Boxes on wheels can be slid under beds or on top of cupboards, and you can teach your children how to organise their toys from an early age.
  • Double-up! Create more space for your darlings by making the toy boxes also the chairs for the art table. Maybe the doll’s house can act as a book-shelf too?
