After 77-year-old Japanese artist Tatsuo Horiuchi retired, he started to make use of Microsoft (MS) Excel to create beautiful landscape paintings.
Decidedly thrifty by nature, he didn’t want to spend money on expensive paint and brushes, so he asked himself how he could teach himself to paint with his PC. This thinking led him to start “painting” with MS Excel.

“When I decided to do this, I had a defiant and experimental mind,” says Tatsuo. Making use of the line tool usually reserved for graphs and the bucket tool, which helps with subtle shading, the results are impressively well layered.
Watch the clip above as he explains how he started and showcases what he’s created so far.
