6 Things Not to Miss at 100% Design SA

WORDS Amelia Brown

A taste of what’s in store at this high-end contemporary design show happening this month in Joburg from 9 to 13 August 2017.

Launched in August 2014, 100% Design South Africa takes place alongside the ever-popular Decorex. In addition to an exciting line-up of exhibitors, there are key feature exhibitions, curated by Platform Creative Agency, that set the show apart…

1. We Are Joburg

The Gauteng iteration of frontrunner We Are Cape Town will also be showcasing design collectives, collaborators and enablers. The exhibition gives creative minds across Jozi the opportunity to explore their individual styles within the context of a remarkable city and its singular Afro-urban aesthetic.

2. Feature Designer 2017

Every year 100% Design South Africa invites a designer or design studio to participate in the exhibition as Feature Designer of the Year in recognition of their consistent quality creative output, originality and sustained success. This year’s designer is Gregor Jenkin  and VISI is the proud official media partner of Gregor’s solo exhibition at the show. Sought-after by high-end design collectors, Gregor is a regular collaborator of artist William Kentridge and a top-seller at the Conran Shop in London. His presentation of new works is a must-see.

3. 100% Design Café

Award-winning furniture designer David Krynauw, best known for his progressive work in wood, will reveal his restaurant interior design talents creating the popular meeting, greeting, eating spot at the centre of the exhibition floor.

4. The Light Tank

A multi-sensory experience, this immersive, experiential display will combine the work of a large collaborative team to demonstrate how effective the right arrangement of light, sound and animation can be. This cutting-edge, technology-driven installation will be produced by interactive designer Goddy Roodt, cinematographer Izelle van Zyl, contemporary artist Matty Roodt, structural designer Leon Roodt of Ergoform, visual effects artist Lloyd Wilgen and composer Deon van Heerden.

5. Fabric and Wallpaper Gallery

Browse a selection of top international and local eye candy – fabrics and wallpaper from 16 leading fabric houses and producers.

6. Seed to Seat

The American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) has commissioned seven South African furniture designers to design a seat using a type of hardwood as a way to illustrate the sustainability of using America Hardwoods the world over. (Read more about it here.) All seven of these unique chairs and seating solutions will be unveiled for the first time at the show.
