
There are so many ways that you can get involved this Mandela Day. Here are just a few ideas to keep in mind, from making monetary, clothing or food donations to causes and charities in need to packing food, cooking soups and building kennels.
Food Forward SA Mandela Day Food Drive
Register as a volunteer at foodforwardsa.org/campaigns/mandela-day/ and help sort and pack donated food as part of Food Forward SA’s Mandela Day Food Drive.

Banks Kitchen Boutique’s Soup Drive
Join Banks Kitchen Boutique in Cape Town as they, alongside local chefs, prepare 67 litres of soup to donate to The Haven Night Shelter and Noah. They need help with donations, chopping vegetables and making deliveries.

Fill 27 Suitcases With Travelstart
Drop off warm clothing, blankets, pet food, non-perishable foods, toiletries, reading books for children, stationery, baby supplies and baby toys at the Travelstart offices to help them fill 27 suitcases – one for each year that Nelson Mandela was in prison – to send them across South Africa to 27 charities.

Build Kennels with the SPCA
The Cape of Good Hope SPCA plans on building 67 kennels to be delivered to animals in need in local communities. Please bring nails, hammers and paint. You can also fund a kennel for R500.

Donate to the Peninsula School Feeding Association
The Peninsula School Feeding Association provides nutritious breakfasts and lunches to kids in need at their schools. These daily school meals provide an incentive to attend school and help children to focus on their studies. Make a donation of R62, which will enable PSFA to provide a hungry child at school with a daily nutritious breakfast and lunch for an entire month. You can also feed a child for a year by donating R450.

Donate to African Tails
African Tails helps to rehome dogs, feeds strays, sterilises and neuters to curb over-population, and more. African Tails does not have a shelter facility and operate on a system of foster homes in and around the greater Cape Town area. Donate cash or airtime, volunteer, adopt or become a foster parent, sponsor a dog, buy a gift sponsorship or buy their calendar. They also need food (preferably dry pellets), puppy and kitten soft food, kennels (secondhand or new), tick and flea collars, tick and flea shampoos and treatments, blankets, towels, leads, bowls, carrier crates, newspaper and paper towels. Get Involved With Breadline Africa
Breadline Africa is running three Mandela Day projects. Help 500 community members at a community development centre by purchasing groceries and cooking in Mitchells Plain, help paint a prefabricated classroom at Springwood Educare Centre in Mitchells Plain, or help plant a vegetable garden for 200 children at the Ubukhobakhe Educate Centre in Khayelitsha.
