3. Clear as light : Danish designer Tobias Tostesen’s transparent Lego chandelier brings to life a newfound sophistication for the standardised toy bricks. The overs-sized lighting fixture comprising 8 000 bricks was launched at the 2013 Milan Design Week. |
Pimp your iPhone : The Taiwanese design group KBme2 have found a way to repurpose old Lego pieces in personalising any iDevice. Simply attach their “brick lighting cap” and let your imagination run wild. |

5. Leg up : Amputee Christina Stephens built herself a customized Lego prosthetic leg in just two hours! Although not entirely functional in the long-term, the 31-year-old is working on a hardier solution that includes carbon reinforcement. |
6. Turning tables : Italian design brand Nucleo celebrated its 15th birthday by releasing a build-it-yourself Lego version of their iconic Histogram table. The instructions to be used on your own Lego are free but a purchasable gold-plated brick acts as Nucleo certification. |
10. Lekker local : Johannesburg-based Toyboy Designs specialises in Lego-based accessories and decor. From Mickey Mouse and Hello Kitty to Angry Birds and Mario Bros, their eight-bit pixel-style pieces add retro bling to outfits or table settings. |

7. Play it again : Dutch designer Anika Brandsma has created the first-ever working record player made solely from Lego. It uses a system that reads musical notes via two colour sensors. The box even includes three figures that turn in time with the music. |
2. Bag it! : Fashioned by Esty retailer Agnieszka Beirnacka, the 25cm-long Lego replica of the Hermes Birkin Bag includes matching pockets and parts, and has been reinforced for everyday use. And it’s more affordable than the original! |
8. Touch wood : Japan-based company Mokurokku have tapped into the trend of the moment and generated wooden Lego blocks. Compatible with the original plastic pieces, these wooden blocks emphasise the distinct tactile qualities of the two materials. |

9. A bird in hand : For artist Tom Poulsom, it all started with a love for red-breasted robins and the desire to create awareness of the importance of birds — flightless or endangered. To date he has built well over 20 Lego birds ranging from owls to toucans. |

What on earth could they all have in common? Lego! We just can’t get enough of these dynamic toy bricks that continue to charm with their inventive creative applications.
