After receiving numerous customer requests for a “California King” size mattress, Sloom has launched a new luxurious super-sized mattress: The Cape Town King.

Sloom, known for their innovative approach to mattresses, understands the importance of getting a good night’s sleep, every night. Their adjustable bed-in-a-box, a unique sleep solution, features customisable comfort layers that can be rearranged according to your preferred firmness, so that you get a dreamy night’s sleep.

Sloom
The Sloom mattress is a customisable mattress with four different comfort layers inside that can be rearranged according to your preferences.

Sloom‘s comfort adjustable layers offer you a range of firmness options, from soft to extra firm. The durable Memory foam molds to the body in response to pressure, distributing body weight evenly. The cool, bouncy Latex foam has superior airflow, reducing body heat buildup which means you get a cooler night’s sleep. The high-density layer serves as both a transitional foam layer and a medium-firm comfort layer, providing you with additional support and comfort. This layer can also serve as the preferred comfort layer, particularly for heavier individuals.

The company’s founder, Rudo Kemp, and his team have invested significant time and effort into creating the perfect bed, which has now been made even better.

“In 2021 we received a negative review from a customer expressing his unhappiness because we did not offer two, three-quarter extra length mattresses for him to make a Super King.  A great idea indeed, the measurements would have been a little off and resulted in a bed 14 cm bigger than a Super King meaning everything from your base, to fitted sheets and duvet sets would have to be custom made.  This got me thinking, why not actually make a unique size for South Africans and give it a lekker local name – The Cape Town King,” says Rudo.

Sloom is South Africa’s first and only comfort adjustable mattress, founded by Rudo Kemp in 2016. The Sloom mattress changes everything you know about buying a bed on its head. Manufactured in South Africa and available to purchase exclusively online.

“A few years ago, while selling beds in the retail industry, one of my biggest frustrations was the number of different beds. All with different, but technically the same features,” says Kemp. It became his mission to engineer one mattress that would eliminate all the stress and time involved in finding the perfect mattress.

Unconventionally the Sloom Mattress is delivered in an easy-to-handle sized box, a testament to the quality foam. You unroll the mattress, much like a fruit roll, and it slickly expands back to its original size.

The Sloom mattress comprises four distinct comfort layers, soft, medium, firm, and extra firm. Changing the comfort level to your preference is effortless and can be done by yourself in the comfort of your own home. The King & Queen size Sloom mattress provides a split-comfort option. “This means you and your partner can each elect a different comfort level. Your wife might prefer the extra firm setting and you the medium. Making choosing a mattress an inclusive process that satisfies both partners’ comfort needs.” Rudo adds.

Unlike traditional bed shops where you have a limited amount of time to decide which mattress is the best for you, Sloom offers a 100-night trial. (Sans awkward salesperson hovering over you.) If you are not completely satisfied with your Sloom mattress between sixty and one hundred nights, we’ll refund you in full.

Sloom struts a zero-motion transfer. The mattress is ideal for motion isolation due to its split design and foam absorption.

Finally, the Sloom mattress offers unmatched transparency. Most people have never seen the inside of their mattresses. Sloom stars a fully removable and machine washable zip-cover, allowing a full view of the interior. The mattress can hold up to 150 kg per person and comes with a 25-year service warranty.

When you consider that around a third of your life is spent sleeping, it makes sense to buy a bed that offers the most benefits for your health and energy. Here are Sealy’s top five tips for choosing a bed that’s best for you:

Buy the best quality bed you can afford. You’ll want your bed to last between five and seven years, so it’s not something you should skimp on.

Before you shop, do some research. A great place to start is sealy.co.za, where you’ll find helpful information about healthy sleep and different mattress comforts, together with the technology and expertise that goes into making Sealy so healthy to sleep on.

Shop at a store that you are comfortable dealing with and has trained sales specialists. Lie on the different comfort choices with different price points until you find the comfort and price that suits you best.

Choose the mattress size carefully. Do you sleep next to a partner? Are you taller than average? Do you toss and turn at night? A bigger size or extra-length mattress may be the answer. A double 137 cm offers a sleep surface area for two people equal to a cot mattress width each.

Finally, take the time to find the right comfort. Sealy offers Firm, X-Firm, Medium, Plush and Ultra Plush comforts to suit your personal preference. Wear comfortable clothes and take the time to lie down on the different comforts in your usual sleep position, to feel the support and comfort each bed offers.

Weylandts created something out of the ordinary for 100% Design South Africa, teaming up with three of South Africa’s most exciting young industrial designers.

Interpreting the brief, 100% Sleep, Weylandts explored four stages of the act of sleeping and dreaming, expressing each in a whimsical pod. Each pod, or stage, featured commissioned pieces by Mpho Vackier of The Urbanative, Thabisa Mjo of Mash. T Design Studio and Monique Vee, that aimed to challenge the way we see bedroom furniture.

The first stage, “The Daydream”, features the playful Nostalgia swing by Monique Vee and the Leap clothing rail by Thabisa Mjo of Mash. T Design Studio — a fresh take on the open rail with a neon-detail terrazzo base.

“The Bedtime Story” explores the time spent before falling asleep — the magic of getting lost in the story. It showcases the capsule bench by Mpho Vackier of The Urbanative and a woven Hourglass stool by Mash. T Design Studio, while Monique Vee’s minimalist L shelves provide plenty of options for lovers of books and objets d’art.

Exploring the darker phase of sleep, “Dreamstate” features a striking hand-printed wooden headboard by The Urbanative. Inspired by woven rope patterns, the piece is aptly called the XXX Headboard.

The final stage, “The Awakening”, is all about the joy of morning light, with the Capsule open wardrobe inspiring with its rust-coloured rope detail and attractive curves.

“For us, it was all about reinterpreting the bedroom and giving designers the chance to look at the bedroom in a new way,” says project leader Anna Weylandt. “We hope to include some of these pieces in our permanent ranges. It will be fascinating to see which designs the public likes most.”

To coincide with 100% Design South Africa, you can vote for your favourite design and stand a chance to win that particular piece. Go to weylandts.co.za/theatre-of-sleep to vote.

A good night’s rest not only fosters productivity, research shows that it’s critical to long-term health and wellness, too. So what can you do in your home to ensure a great sleep?

While a great bed is a good start, other factors that will affect your sleep quality include noise, air quality, air flow, room temperature and light. Saint-Gobain building materials were used in Stand 47 to illustrate how they can contribute to overall comfort and improved sleep. These materials include a number of Gyproc plasterboards with varying functions such as Activ’ Air – a wall that absorbs formaldehydes to make the air cleaner. Geoffrey Crow, Brand and Marketing Manager at Century Property Developments, was one of the Stand 47 Rest Test Pilots who spent a night at Stand 47 to experience the home for themselves.

“The house was extremely quiet, and I slept much better than I expected to,” says Geoffrey. “Now that I have experienced a luxury home built without bricks for the first time, my perceptions of homes like Stand 47 have changed.”

About Stand 47

Saint-Gobain produces building materials that are geared to help you build a better home for improved quality of life that are also kinder to the environment. Not satisfied with simply making this claim themselves, Saint-Gobain built Stand 47 using their own materials so others could experience this improved home for themselves. The result? A home that offers better sleep, more relaxation and improved productivity levels.

Fancy being one of Saint-Gobain’s Rest Test Pilots? Apply to test the Stand 47 house for yourself at stand47.co.za.

Wake up! It’s World Sleep Day today, 14 March, and in the spirit of getting everyone excited about the healthy and happy benefits of dossing eight hours a night, as well as warding off nasty sleep disorders, we compiled 10 tips for World Sleep Day to help make your bedroom a more sleep-friendly haven.

Why all this hoo-ha about such a simple and basic human function? Well, according to the World Association of Sleep Medicine’s World Sleep Day committee, sleeplessness is a global epidemic, and people don’t realise the effect of a good night’s rest on health and happiness. An annual drive founded back in 2008, World Sleep Day wants to make people aware of just how good a good snooze is and so prevent and manage sleep disorders. This they think will lighten the burden of sleep problems on society at large. With less than one third of people seeking professional help for sleep problems, it seems that most are unaware that tossing and turning at night, and waking up often aren’t normal and are treatable.

Sounds like you? Check out our bed-experts’ tips and give it a try. It may just be the thing you need to help count away the sheep, happily ever after…

  • Most importantly they say, is to invest in the best quality mattress and base possible. Even go as far as to have the position you sleep in assessed before you buy a bed.
  • Then get a super fab 100% cotton pillow. If you don’t do feathers, get it with micro fibre filling – it will hold its shape for longer.
  • Get the tog of your inner duvet just right. For summer, the perfect weight is around 4.5 tog and in winter, for the very cold nights, 13.5 tog. Wonder what’s a tog? It’s a rating that shows a duvet’s ability to trap warm air, the higher the tog, the warmer the duvet.
  • Only sleep in quality cotton linen, it will keep your skin breathing.
  • Next is: sleep in the dark! Even when it’s light. Invest in 100% block out curtain lining and you won’t wake up when the sun does. Some 25mm venetian blinds hung behind your curtains can also do the trick.
  • And, for goodness sake, if you can tear yourself away from your cellphone so that you two sleep in separate rooms while it’s charging its own batteries, just do it! For the sake of peaceful sleep.
  • Make sure your aircon blows over your bed and not directly on top of you.
  • Some say go with natural colours in the bedroom for undisturbed sleep, other say throw together whatever colours take your fancy, just make it yours, that’s comfort enough.
  • If possible, have a separate space in your room for simply sitting, reading and relaxing. Try to keep your sleep space only for sleeping.
  • Finally, soft carpets and fluffy rugs create a sense of cosiness in the bedroom. Team that with soft scatter cushions on the bed, those you can just flop on top of, bury your head among and fall into heavenly sleep in. Yes, those.

And then, it’s good night!

We’re giving away a luxurious Java Silk queen-sized duvet inner and two pillows. Enter here.

With more than 125 years in the industry, the family-owned German-based company Sanders produces high-quality duvets and pillows that address common sleep disturbances. We’re rather excited about the selection of duvets and pillows at their Cape Town branch. Here are some suggestions for can’t-do-without softs.

18 days 21 hours 40 minutes is the record for the longest period without sleep. It was during a rocking-chair marathon. The record holder reported hallucinations, paranoia, blurred vision, slurred speech, and memory and concentration lapses.

The Couples Duvet

If you and your partner suffer from the age-old problem of one person being too hot and the other too cold, stress no more. Containing 70% duck down and 30% duck feather, the Couples Duvet has a different amount of filling for each side of the bed to accommodate different sensitivities to temperature. And, just like that, no more bedtime arguments about the duvet. From R4 590.

The Three Chamber Pillow

As its name suggests, this pillow has three chambers: a 100% goose-feather inner chamber for support, and two outer chambers filled with 90% goose down and 10% goose feathers. This results in a pillow that sleeps like a down cushion but has the sturdy support of a feather headrest. We’re feeling sleepy just thinking about it… in a good way. From R599.

Four Seasons Oxford Tencel

This duvet is perfect for summer and for transitioning to the cooler season. It’s got a stitch duvet for the hotter months, with an additional inner to take you into a luxurious and comfortable winter. This bit of magic is achieved by using extra fine batiste fabric, 50% Tencel and 50% Egyptian cotton, which is then filled with the best Polish goose down. Ah! Sweetest dreams. From R8 290.
