LIM owner and designer Pauline Mutlow has no regrets about taking a chance and changing her career path at 39. LIM’s doors opened in 1997 – and, 24 years later, the brand still operates from the same location.

2014: ADINKRA MARRIAGE CABINET

In celebration of my 40th wedding anniversary, I designed a small range that incorporated the West African Adinkra marriage symbol as an engraved pattern on the doors. The units were manufactured in walnut, which represents a mature yet contemporary material to me. It also celebrates the concept of commitment and longevity.

2019: POPPY LAMPS

Inspired by the seasonal poppies sold by flower sellers at the side of the road, the Straight and Curved Poppy lamps combine to mimic the form of a bunch of flowers. These joyful lights are manufactured from steel tubing and black-coated epoxy. I feel happy every time I see them.

2019: CHEVRON DESIGN SERVER

With its geometric design, this server was originally created for a client’s dining room. Its minimalist nature doesn’t stop it from drawing the eye, particularly to the pattern on the doors. This four-door version is available to order in a variety of spray colours – we offer the option of customising it in-store and on our website.

STORAGE TOWEL RAIL

A customer wanted a towel rail with a storage facility included – that was the inspiration behind this piece. Square steel tubing and a flat tray top are joined by black-coated epoxy to produce a piece that pleases, both in function and in form. It’s always satisfying to design something that’s practical and fulfils a client’s needs.

2021: SHORT BENDIE LAMP

This lamp is another product inspired by meeting a customer’s needs. The client wanted a bedside lamp for reading that wasn’t imported, so we created this piece, which offers a great angle and affords the necessary light. It’s a quintessential LIM piece, honouring the sentiment that “less is more”.

Skinny laMinx has introduced a new collection to its striking textile portfolio.

The collection, entitled Brise Soleil (meaning “break the sun”), is inspired by Modernist concrete and perforated brickwork.

Heather Moore, founder of Skinny laMinx, has been capturing the shapes and patterns of these mid-century bricks across the world, from Japan to Los Angeles. These structures became the muse for the latest range.

The range consists of three textile designs in three colourways.

Weft is available in concrete, petrol and sunray. Aperture is available in concrete, teal and moonbeam and Breeze is available in concrete, petrol and moonbeam.

In addition to these prints, two Skinny laMinx favourites have been re-released in a new colourway too. Woodpile has been released in teal and Brancusi Stripe in shell.

Heather Moore also approached four local furniture manufacturers to showcase the new Skinny laMinx fabrics on a signature furniture item. LIM’s steel daybed uses the Weft design and The New Modernist’s 1950s reproduction sofa features Aperture, both in concrete. Saks Corner’s Clarke Sofa is upholstered in Breeze in moonbeam while Bofred used Breeze in petrol for the Harold Sofa.

According to those in the know, we spend a third of our lives in the bedroom, so why not let this inspire you to make your boudoir as beautiful as possible?

BACK TO BLACK

A little bit of monochromatic magic, along with exotic props and natural accessories add to the allure of this well-travelled bedroom.

GET THIS LOOK:

• Instead of opting for standard black and white, paint the bottom two-thirds of the walls with the dark grey of Plascon Shark’s Tail (P3-E1-1) and the top third with Plascon Ivory White (Y4-B2-3). 
• Create contrast with white, wood and other natural elements, like the rustic wooden stumps that double as bedside tables; hand-stitched, vintage French linen; and earthy, handmade bedding from natural fibres. 
• Paint the ledge above the bed in the same colour as the back wall and stack with framed artworks in different sizes. 
• Vintage books are repurposed to sculpt a three-dimensional map of Africa and add interest.

THE BED WORE RED

Warm reds, shades of white and “greyge”, striking art and minimal clutter make for a clean, serene contemporary sanctuary.

GET THIS LOOK:

• Keep the background neutral by painting the walls “greyge” (not quite beige and not quite grey and very on trend right now) with Plascon Double Velvet Fresh Linen (Y3-E2-3). 
• Steer clear of clutter and opt for a very clean, contemporary look with two or three high-design elements as highlights. 
• Choose accessories that are stripped of detail to let the print above the bed act as a focal point. Opt for original art rather than prints when attempting a high-design look. 
• Instead of investing in a bright red duvet cover, bring in understated red accents with an undersheet and scatter cushions. 
• Ground the look with a felt carpet that also adds texture and an element of masculinity.
