After receiving numerous customer requests for a “California King” size mattress, Sloom has launched a new luxurious super-sized mattress: The Cape Town King.

Sloom, known for their innovative approach to mattresses, understands the importance of getting a good night’s sleep, every night. Their adjustable bed-in-a-box, a unique sleep solution, features customisable comfort layers that can be rearranged according to your preferred firmness, so that you get a dreamy night’s sleep.

Sloom
The Sloom mattress is a customisable mattress with four different comfort layers inside that can be rearranged according to your preferences.

Sloom‘s comfort adjustable layers offer you a range of firmness options, from soft to extra firm. The durable Memory foam molds to the body in response to pressure, distributing body weight evenly. The cool, bouncy Latex foam has superior airflow, reducing body heat buildup which means you get a cooler night’s sleep. The high-density layer serves as both a transitional foam layer and a medium-firm comfort layer, providing you with additional support and comfort. This layer can also serve as the preferred comfort layer, particularly for heavier individuals.

The company’s founder, Rudo Kemp, and his team have invested significant time and effort into creating the perfect bed, which has now been made even better.

“In 2021 we received a negative review from a customer expressing his unhappiness because we did not offer two, three-quarter extra length mattresses for him to make a Super King.  A great idea indeed, the measurements would have been a little off and resulted in a bed 14 cm bigger than a Super King meaning everything from your base, to fitted sheets and duvet sets would have to be custom made.  This got me thinking, why not actually make a unique size for South Africans and give it a lekker local name – The Cape Town King,” says Rudo.

Sloom is South Africa’s first and only comfort adjustable mattress, founded by Rudo Kemp in 2016. The Sloom mattress changes everything you know about buying a bed on its head. Manufactured in South Africa and available to purchase exclusively online.

“A few years ago, while selling beds in the retail industry, one of my biggest frustrations was the number of different beds. All with different, but technically the same features,” says Kemp. It became his mission to engineer one mattress that would eliminate all the stress and time involved in finding the perfect mattress.

Unconventionally the Sloom Mattress is delivered in an easy-to-handle sized box, a testament to the quality foam. You unroll the mattress, much like a fruit roll, and it slickly expands back to its original size.

The Sloom mattress comprises four distinct comfort layers, soft, medium, firm, and extra firm. Changing the comfort level to your preference is effortless and can be done by yourself in the comfort of your own home. The King & Queen size Sloom mattress provides a split-comfort option. “This means you and your partner can each elect a different comfort level. Your wife might prefer the extra firm setting and you the medium. Making choosing a mattress an inclusive process that satisfies both partners’ comfort needs.” Rudo adds.

Unlike traditional bed shops where you have a limited amount of time to decide which mattress is the best for you, Sloom offers a 100-night trial. (Sans awkward salesperson hovering over you.) If you are not completely satisfied with your Sloom mattress between sixty and one hundred nights, we’ll refund you in full.

Sloom struts a zero-motion transfer. The mattress is ideal for motion isolation due to its split design and foam absorption.

Finally, the Sloom mattress offers unmatched transparency. Most people have never seen the inside of their mattresses. Sloom stars a fully removable and machine washable zip-cover, allowing a full view of the interior. The mattress can hold up to 150 kg per person and comes with a 25-year service warranty.

Sealy has been helping South Africans sleep better for more than 50 years, however Sealy’s impact extends well past our borders.

For more than 100 years, Sealy has been delivering quality sleep to consumers in the US and other countries around the world. In fact, Sealy recently came out tops in an annual bedding survey.

In May 2020, Sealy was ranked number one on Furniture Today’s list of the top 20 US Bedding Producers. Furniture Today is one of the most respected trade publications in the US bedding industry and has compiled the list of top bedding producers annually since the 1970s.

“Sealy is the biggest bed brand in the world, operating in more than 50 countries, and has become a household name dedicated to making the finest mattresses,” says Sealy South Africa brand executive, Riaan Strydom.

What makes a Sealy? It takes a team of dedicated Sealy professionals working together to make a world-class mattress, the use of good-quality locally sourced materials, access to superior technology and in-depth, up-to-date research, and a dedicated quality assurance department. “Our passion for people, sleep and innovation is evident in our world-wide reputation as a leading and instantly recognised bed brand,” says Riaan.

In South Africa, Sealy is manufactured by Bravo Group Sleep Products. With seven factories in South Africa, Bravo Group is home to many of the country’s most beloved brands in the lounge and bedding categories, and a proud employer of over 3 000 local employees. Sealy bed sets are manufactured at state-of-the art facilities in Johannesburg, Cape Town, KwaZulu-Natal and Windhoek.

“Our products are manufactured locally, and raw materials are sourced from local suppliers,” explains Riaan. “When you order a Sealy mattress, it is hand-crafted to precision in our factories – made with steel milled in South Africa; raw materials sourced locally and timber from sustainable local plantations. Our beds are delivered to almost 3 000 South African-owned bed retailer doors throughout the country.”

Sealy South Africa Looks Back on 50+ Years https://visi.co.za/sealy-south-africa-looks-back-on-50-years/ Mon, 01 Jun 2020 05:00:23 +0000 https://visi.co.za/?p=587673 Did you know Sealy is a place? And we’re not just talking about that comfortable place where you get your best sleep.

Did you know Sealy is a place? And we’re not just talking about that comfortable place where you get your best sleep. Sealy is an actual town in Texas – and it’s where the first ever Sealy mattress was made.

The Sealy journey began in 1881 in Sealy, Texas, with Daniel Haynes. Haynes – a cotton gin builder – started a cotton mattress business, eventually selling to another Texas-based company after 15 years. The company launched a national advertisement campaign across the United States with the slogan “Sleeping on a Sealy is like sleeping on a cloud.”

“Sealy mattresses are continuously improved thanks to ongoing research and development, but one thing has remained the same since Haynes made his first cotton mattress more than a century ago: They’re all made with the same care and pride,” says Sealy South Africa brand executive, Riaan Strydom. “We’ve been making Sealy beds in South Africa for more than 50 years.”

After experiencing widespread success in the United States, Sealy expanded globally, beginning operations in South Africa in 1967. Sealy South Africa produced its first mattress at a factory in Johannesburg that year, and the technical innovations it introduced to the market led to its mattresses becoming the number one choice for South Africans.

Now, more than 50 years later, Sealy South Africa is still producing top quality Posturepedic Technology™ mattresses – in consultation with orthopaedic surgeons – at facilities in Johannesburg, Cape Town, KwaZulu-Natal and Windhoek. In 2006, Sealy announced the creation of the Orthopaedic Advisory Board. This committee is an industry authority, bringing together the expertise of orthopaedic and clinical surgeons to focus on development and innovation.

Through a knowledge exchange partnership with Sealy USA, Sealy South Africa has access to the latest advancements in sleep technology. “This partnership puts Sealy South Africa one step ahead of other local manufacturers, thanks to the millions of dollars spent on research and development,” adds Riaan. “All this is in support of our mission to provide South Africans with a more peaceful and restful sleep.”

Sealy mattresses are sold at select dealers throughout South Africa and the company is also a leading supplier to the hospitality industry in the country. “We’re proud to look back on more than five decades of history, heritage, and remarkable achievements in sleep technology. In the next 50 years, we will continue our efforts to remain the top consumer choice and remain unwavering in its vision to help customers sleep better,” says Riaan.

Manufacturing thousands of beds daily, Sealy believes in the importance of doing business in South Africa.

“Sealy was launched in 1967 in South Africa, when we were awarded the USA license to manufacture in our Johannesburg factory,” says Sealy brand executive, Riaan Strydom. “We’ve always been passionate about sustainability and local manufacturing.”

Sealy, with a South African heritage spanning more than 50 years, is a brand manufactured by Bravo Group Sleep Products. With seven factories in South Africa, Bravo Group is home to many of the country’s most beloved brands in the lounge and bedding categories, including Sealy South Africa.

Sealy South Africa has manufacturing facilities in Johannesburg, Cape Town, KwaZulu-Natal and Windhoek. “Our products are manufactured locally, and raw materials are sourced from local suppliers,” explains Riaan. “When you order a Sealy mattress, it is handcrafted to precision in our factories, made with steel milled in South Africa, materials sourced locally and timber from sustainable local plantations.”

“By purchasing a South African made product, you encourage local growth by supporting job creation,” says Riaan. “Additionally, the money you spend on a home-grown product, such as a Sealy bed, goes back into the community through job creation and the purchase of raw products from other local businesses and service providers.”

From entry-level to high-end luxury, Sealy’s locally made, hand-crafted mattresses are built upon years of research and advanced technology.

“At Sealy, we are constantly researching and improving on our beds, but for more than 50 years, ‘end-to-end attention’ is a Sealy hallmark we pride ourselves on,” says Sealy South Africa brand executive, Riaan Strydom. “Every Sealy bed made passes through 11 sets of hands, minimum. Every detail – from design, selection of materials and research and development to prototype building and new product launches – is personally managed, influenced, quality checked and processed by the highly trained and precision-skilled hands of Sealy employees.”

Through constant research and development, as well as collaboration and studies with orthopaedic surgeons across the globe, the Sealy team has established the best “criteria” for optimal sleep: a mattress with an interconnected spring system, topped with foam and comfort layers that can support the ideal sleeping posture – meaning the body is in its natural position to fully relieve muscular tension. This is what is known today as Sealy’s exclusive Posturepedic Technology, which targets the heaviest part of your body, with reinforced support where you need it most.

There are a wide range of mattresses to choose from to suit your sleep position, personal preference and budget, whether you are looking for pressure relief for your shoulders or hips, support for your lower back or are simply wanting to wake up feeling better. Make sure to test a few beds before making a decision. When you lie down on each bed, try and feel if it interacts cooperatively with your entire body.

When you consider that around a third of your life is spent sleeping, it makes sense to buy a bed that offers the most benefits for your health and energy. Here are Sealy’s top five tips for choosing a bed that’s best for you:

Buy the best quality bed you can afford. You’ll want your bed to last between five and seven years, so it’s not something you should skimp on.

Before you shop, do some research. A great place to start is sealy.co.za, where you’ll find helpful information about healthy sleep and different mattress comforts, together with the technology and expertise that goes into making Sealy so healthy to sleep on.

Shop at a store that you are comfortable dealing with and has trained sales specialists. Lie on the different comfort choices with different price points until you find the comfort and price that suits you best.

Choose the mattress size carefully. Do you sleep next to a partner? Are you taller than average? Do you toss and turn at night? A bigger size or extra-length mattress may be the answer. A double 137 cm offers a sleep surface area for two people equal to a cot mattress width each.

Finally, take the time to find the right comfort. Sealy offers Firm, X-Firm, Medium, Plush and Ultra Plush comforts to suit your personal preference. Wear comfortable clothes and take the time to lie down on the different comforts in your usual sleep position, to feel the support and comfort each bed offers.

Forget everything you think you know about buying a mattress… We chat to Robin Jones, whose ideo e-commerce start-up will deliver a high-quality mattress to your door at the click of a mouse.

Tell us about ideo?

The main idea behind ideo is the ability to deliver a high-end mattress from the factory to your door for free anywhere in South Africa, usually within two to three days, at a third of the price you would pay retail. This starts your 60-night trial, with the option of returning it free of charge for a full refund.

It came about after I needed to buy a new mattress. I visited some stores and did a bit of research online. What I found was eight or nine well-known brands that all started to look and feel the same.

I started to research mattress and upholstery materials, and learnt that mattress retailers inflate their prices dramatically. So I delved deeper and designed my own dream mattress. The idea of compressing the mattress for delivery only came later, after I came across a Chinese manufacturer that had been roll-packing foam mattresses for years.

Who are your suppliers?

Most of my components are manufactured locally in Tongaat, Pinetown, Hammersdale and Cape Town. The cover is stitched on and the mattress made in Pietermaritzburg.

What sets the ideo mattress apart from its competitors?

Cutting out the middleman saves costs, which we pass on to the consumer. Convenience, I think, also plays a big part; we have delivered quite a few mattresses to work addresses.

What are your main challenges at the moment?

Driving traffic to the website is a challenge. Social media and SEO drive most of the traffic, as I don’t advertise. Word of mouth and referrals are picking up, and customer reviews also help. Educating consumers about the advantages of an exclusively foam mattress is also important. Some people have only experienced spring and low-quality foam mattresses, and do not know that not all foam is created equal.

These gorgeous jugs by Established & Sons have our hearts racing. The two intersecting cones that make up the body of each handsome jug were inspired by old-style oil cans in which the funnel was connected to the main body.

Each jug is beautifully hand crafted – cut, rolled, soldered and polished – from solid pewter sheets. The available sizes include 236ml, 473ml and 750ml.

These jugs are perfect for water, milk or decanting a bottle of wine, and the funnel spout is designed to pour a precise and controllable flow of liquid.
