New Collection: of Earth By Dear Rae https://visi.co.za/new-collection-of-earth-by-dear-rae/ Thu, 30 Apr 2020 06:00:48 +0000 https://visi.co.za/?p=586708 Cape Town-based jewellery design studio Dear Rae's latest collection – of EARTH – is a tribute to Mother Nature, with a percentage of the proceeds going to small-scale farmers.

Cape Town-based jewellery design studio Dear Rae’s latest collection – of EARTH – is a tribute to Mother Nature, with a percentage of the proceeds going to small-scale farmers.

Owner and jewellery designer Karin Rae Matthee was initially inspired to explore a botanical theme, but as she drew and immersed herself in the process she found it evolving into a larger, more encompassing concept. In celebration of the natural world and our interconnectedness, the collection’s sculptural and organic forms are intended to mimic the raw shapes and textures of plants, landscapes and the human body.

of EARTH

She is the warm sand beneath your feet
The ocean in midsummer heat

She is the perfumed soil after rain
The full moon easing your pain

She is the tapestry of a wildflower hill
The beasts and the forests they fill

She is Nature

When she thrives, we thrive
When she trembles, we tremble

Delicately powerful
she is poetry in a planet

Trace your fingers along her lines
and heed yourself in her words

Surrender to her rhythm
Follow her flow
Observe her composition
and know;

You are a visiting verse
You are of Earth

The range of pendants and necklaces, rings, earrings and bracelets, some set with gemstones, are designed in sterling silver and 9ct yellow gold, and also feature limited once-off stone pieces.

“I decided to use opaque minerals in this collection,” explains Karin. “The fact that they are not necessarily seen as precious or even semi-precious gems, I find that their incredible beauty is often overlooked. I wanted to use this range as a platform to reveal their raw, unpolished and unfaceted magnificence. These are treasures that remind us to return to nature. To return to ourselves. To return back down to Earth.”

To acknowledge the timing and broader context of the release of the collection, and support the belief that collaboration will lead to a more sustainable future, Dear Rae has pledged to donate 5% of all profits from of EARTH to the Umthunzi Farming Community, a social business founded in response to the difficulties small-scale farmers are facing.

of EARTH is available to shop online at dearrae.co.za. Follow Dear Rae on Instagram (@dearrae) for updates and take a virtual look inside the jewellery design studio’s beautiful Cape Town retail store here.

WORDS Lindi Brownell Meiring IMAGES Amy Keevy

An ever-growing brand lead local jewellery design studio Dear Rae to leave its Woodstock premises and open a new 220m² workshop and retail space on Cape Town’s Bree Street.

“Creating a home for Dear Rae has always been an important and enjoyable process for me,” says founder Karin Rae Matthee, who designed the new space together with the brand’s team, including Brand and Retail Manager Amy Keevy and furniture designer Cameron Barnes. “Traditionally jewellery workshops are dark and dingy, and jewellery stores can often be quite pretentious and formal. I love the idea of creating a beautiful, light workshop / studio that encourages people to collaborate creatively, and in the same breath, welcome clients into the shop, like a friend visiting a comfortable home.”

The space, inspired in part by Karin’s love of texture, colour and nature, is divided into different areas with specific purposes, from manufacturing and packaging to consulting. “It was quite a challenge to figure out the layout at first,” says Karin. “It was pokey with lots of different rooms and corners, but this suited us fine.”

Karin happened upon 164 Bree while walking down the popular street with a friend. “My eye immediately spotted the TO LET sign on the quaint Victorian style corner building,” she says. “I knocked on the door, had a look around and knew instantly that this space was perfect for Dear Rae’s new season. We moved in two months later – it just felt right.”

Inside, the shop features a subtle colour palette, combined with pale wood shop fittings, plants and a selection of both vintage and new furniture, inspired by something Karin describes as “a mix of elements that we have collected along the way – like a treasure chest that manages to hold objects and memories from many journeys.”

Outside, clients are invited to relax on the terrace. “The garden terrace is by far my favourite part of the building,” says Karin. “It allows clients to enjoy a peaceful resting space surrounded by indigenous plants and a beautiful view as part of the retail experience.”

Having the use of both an indoor and outdoor area is something the brand wants to explore more in the near future. “My hope is to create a quiet and inspiring haven in a busy city,” says Karin.

Visit Dear Rae at 164 Bree Street, Cape Town, or shop online at dearrae.co.za.

WORDS Amelia Brown

Cape Town-based jewellery designer Karen Rae unveils her dreamy SS 17 Collection entitled Rumi that speaks of balance, bravery and equilibrium.

Meticulously crafted from silver, brass and gold, Karin Rae’s newest range is an ode to the inevitable moments along the path of self-discovery. The collection aims to remind us of the essential search for inner balance, with designs titled Gaze, Reflect, Rise and Fall, and Rhythm.

Magnificent once-off diamond rings accompany the range, each boasting bold and colourful diamonds of different tones, shapes and sizes. Included in the range are collaborative artworks by Karin Rae and fellow artist Amy Keevy, who attest to a powerful balance that can be achieved when selflessly sharing a creative process.
