Southern Comfort is wrapped up and ready for the festive season. Playing on the brand’s birthplace, the New Orleans, award-winning illustrator Christian Northeast has designed a shrink-wrapped bottle that is very merry indeed.

We’re thinking it would be wise to store a few of these away as a last-minute gift. The shrink-wrap means that the bottle doesn’t need to be wrapped, and each bottle comes with a handy gift tag.

There is no additional cost on this limited-edition 750ml Christmas bottle, so grab a few now for a cheery addition to the drinks table at your Christmas party or for that uncle for whom you always forget to buy a gift.

Graphic designer Bia van Deventer is the creative genius behind our fabulous “Perdry op Noordhoekstrand” wrapping paper. We talk to her about the things that make her world go round.

What inspires you?
Everything. A beautiful day, old waterlogged paintings from Woodstock, vintage postcards, bright-pink roses, a great movie, haunting music, visiting places for the first time, Indian architecture, and unexpected colours and textures.

I’m also inspired by the little aesthetics and contrasts that form part of my daily surroundings such as my boyfriend’s extensive collection of vintage cameras and our vintage furniture in the modern environment of our flat. I love the blending of old and new.

What are you passionate about?
The people in my life, music, travelling and expressing myself creatively.

What does good design mean to you?
Good design is always evident if particular attention has been paid to every element of the design such as the typography, the colour and the layout, while, at the same time, the designer has succeeded in keeping true to the essence of the brief.

True design is finding a symbiosis between all these elements and embodying a type of respect for each one’s place and purpose in the layout.

Who is your favourite designer(s) and why?
The Australian company Mash Design. Their delicate use of texture, layout and typography, combined with interesting new ideas, keeps me in awe. I love how they use every opportunity available to use raw elements in their design. Whether it’s interesting photography or experimenting with different types of illustration, they always seem to achieve an amazing free flow of elements with an underlying structure in their fonts.

I also adore the work of Finish illustrator Sanna Annukka. I love that graphic design/illustration can be applied to so many mediums, from printed cards and wallpaper, to fabric, crockery and fashion. Sanna’s characters have even been made into cookie cutters!

If you could be anywhere right now, where would you want to be?
With my family, camping in Tietiesbaai… and perhaps from there a quick trip to Rome.

Tell us about the designs you created for VISI.
The idea for the designs came to life when I realised that life can very easily be complicated by everyday routine. I wanted to get back to the basics of what really makes a day special, so I decided to dedicate an entire design to the pigeon that sits on my balcony every morning. Such minuscule events can easily be overlooked if you live past life’s little gifts.

The “Perdy op Noordhoekstrand” design is dedicated to one of my best friends, Lucille. Instead of birthday gifts we give each other experiences. I took her to Spier last year to play with the baby cheetahs and she took me horseback riding on Noordhoek beach.
