WORDS Annemarie Meintjes

As the annual Haute Lumière Light Competition approaches its tenth year, we take a look at some of the previous winners and their designs.

Haute Lumière, of which VISI is a proud media partner, is an initiative of Paul Pamboukian of Pamboukian Lightdesign. The aim is to grow awareness of the importance of lighting as a design tool and to rethink artificial light as a primary aspect of design. The competition is open to anyone living, studying or working in South Africa. Each year, the winner gets to attend the lighting workshop Lights in Alingsås, which is hosted by leading European lighting designers in the town of Alingsås in Sweden.

Previous winners and their designs:

2008: The inaugural competition took place.

WINNERS: Anja Zajaczkowska and Carson Smuts won with a standing wall lamp called The Peacock. “The experience gave us some insight into how people operate in a ‘design build’ environment. One gains a deeper understanding of both the realities of design and the thought process required. It is about learning how to explore the space of a problem as opposed to trying to solve it. “The experience encouraged us to explore other aspects of design and led to lecturing digital design at Columbia University, lighting installations for the American Institute of Architects and, most recently, augmented projection systems and hardware design at MIT’s Media Lab.”

2009: Four hybrid designs took the honours this year.

WINNERS: From first to last are Sulet Jansen’s Oli Light, which won her a visit to the Philips factory in Eindhoven; the Comp Light by Dokter and Misses, the judges’ ultimate must-own item; Hester Klaassen’s Shadow Light, which earned her a Professional Lighting Designers’ Association workshop session; and August de Wet’s Control One design, which took him to the Lights in Alingsås workshop.

2010: The competition was all about recycling.

WINNERS: Michael Frost’s Replay (pictured first) won, followed by Stiaan Bester’s gutter-downpipe-inspired wall-mounted light.

_dcr1542_dcr1373a

2011: The design concept was Let’s Play.

WINNERS: Eduard Claassens’ Photon Snake (pictured first) won, followed by August de Wet’s science-project-inspired light with three light sources and a switch, that, when pressed, selected one of the light sources at random, mimicking the game rock-paper-scissors.

_dcr3003_dcr2893

2012: The brief was to use timber to create a self-supporting light fitting of any description.

WINNERS: Mandi Botha’s Joint Exposure (pictured first) won her the first prize and attendance at the workshop in Alingsås. Peter Crotty’s Buddha Lamp deserves a mention.

2013: This year the designers set about defining space with light.

WINNERS: Amy Phillips won with her Invigorate installation (pictured first) and Chaya Michels’ magical Night Space is worthy of a mention.

_mg_6751 hlumiere11

2014: Contestants were challenged to transform a shipping container into a space of wonder by way of imaginative use of light.

WINNER: Claudine Park took top honours with her design The Vortex.

img_8057 dsc_0133

2015: The brief was to create any original light object that has an impact on a self-defined interior space.

WINNER: Braam de Villiers of Earthworld Architects won with his Moonlight luminaire, inspired by the night sky.

braam_moonlight

2016: Participants were tasked with designing a work lamp for themselves.

WINNER: Biance Barnard’s Articulate light will take her to Alingsås in 2017.

WORDS Lindi Brownell Meiring

The last time someone requested a bed to be installed at London’s iconic Abbey Road Studios was in the summer of 1969. Now, thanks to Airbnb, the renowned music studio will be transformed into a bedroom for the night. Better yet, you could win the chance to stay there.

Your host? Superstar producer and DJ Mark Ronson. The experience? Staying in the spot where Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon was recorded, where Amy Winehouse recorded her last ever song with Tony Bennett, and where The Beatles worked on The White Album. When you arrive, Mark Ronson will actually take you on an all-access tour of the 19th century, four-storey townhouse.

“Unless you are a recording artist, it is almost impossible to get inside Abbey Road Studios,” says James McClure, Airbnb’s General Manager for Northern Europe. “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for a music lover to cross its threshold and unearth thousands of stories that live within its walls. Guests will be able to enjoy everything that the studios have to offer, including the option to record during the stay.”

Sound amazing? Visit the Airbnb listing and find out how you can win.

Following the resounding success of the PPC Imaginarium Awards 2015/16 – where a total of 47 regional finalists were selected to exhibit compared to the previous year’s tally of 21 finalists – the official Call to Entry for the third edition of the awards went out on Friday 15 April 2016.

Un-established artists and designers stand a chance to change their careers through financial support, recognition, mentorship and guidance by entering the PPC Imaginarium Awards 2016/17.

Having evolved from the longstanding PPC Young Concrete Sculptor Awards, the PPC Imaginarium encourages artists and designers to create and express their abilities using Portland cement-based concrete as a primary base or material. The competition will feature six disciplines in the arts and design fields, namely sculpture, jewellery, architecture, film, industrial design and fashion design.

Boasting prize money to the value of R500 000, each category winner stands a chance to win R50 000, while runner-up contestants receive R15 000. The overall competition winner will receive the grand prize of R100 000 at the winners’ exhibition in 2017. Think you’ve got what it takes to enter? Entry registrations should be submitted online via the official website.

The PPC Imaginarium Awards are open to South African citizens, resident holders as well as foreign students with study permits, who are not professionally established in their respective fields. Artists and designers may enter multiple categories, with an original artwork for each category. Team submissions and collaborations will be accepted. Entries close on Friday 30 September 2016.

The winners in each competition category will be announced in March 2017 and their work will be on display at the University of Johannesburg in Auckland Park. The overall competition winner announcement will take place in April 2017. All finalists’ entries will be showcased in a travelling exhibition, professionally transported by Stuttafords Van Lines.

For more information about the PPC Imaginarium Awards or to view the digital gallery of the 2015/16 finalists’ work, visit ppcimaginarium.co.za.

All of life’s a bubble, but not all bubbles are created equal. Most worthy locally is the Boschendal Grande Cuvée Brut 2009, which has won the Amorim Tsogo Sun Cap Classique Challenge 2013. And, to top it off, we’ve got a case of six up for grabs!

Besides overall winner, it also took first place in the Best Vintage Brut category. With more than 102 entries (the most received to date) competition was tough, however Boschendal winemaker Lizelle Gerber says that the success did not come as a surprise as 2009 is known to be one of South Africa’s best vintages.

“Grapes for good Method Cap Classique wines need to ripen as slowly as possible and must be harvested at the optimum time,” according to Cape wine master Allan Mullins, chairman of the judging panel. “Method Cap Classique made from grapes that are harvested too early will be lean and acidic and harvesting too late will result in dull and flabby wines.”

The Boschendal was made in the Method of Champagne at the historic Franschhoek winery, where all vineyards are well over 15 years old. Meticulous attention was given to selecting the blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay fruit for the Grande Cuvée Brut 2009. Expect to savour some tantalising fresh green apple, hints of citrus and subtle influences of almond biscotti. With a 36 months aging on the lees, expect to experience a complex and creamy sparkling wine with superb balance and an elegant seamless finish.

And, as Lizelle says: “We normally say that one does not need to wait for the right moment to open a bottle of bubbly, opening the bottle creates the moment!”

For more information: 021 870 4200, www.boschendal.com.

To win a case of six bottles of Boschendal Grande Cuvée Brut 2009, simply tell us in the comments below what you would toast to when you pop the cork. Enter by noon on Wednesday 27 November 2013.
