VISI Bathrooms 2024 is on sale now: preview four new trends you need to know about, plus micro trends, expert advice and pro tips to help you create your dream bathroom.

Welcome to the fourth edition of our annual VISI Bathrooms Special Issue. Once again, we bring you all the key trends, expert advice and insider tips you’ll need if you’re planning to redesign, refurb or even just freshen up your home’s bathrooms.

This year, we celebrate the transformative power of personalisation in bathroom design. Gone are the days when, first and foremost, we were aiming to “improve the resale value” – now, it’s all about acknowledging how much time we spend in this important part of our home. We have begun to embrace the idea that our bathroom should reflect our personality and preferences.

In this issue, we take a look at the four key trends that illustrate this shift towards the modern bathroom as a personalised space.

  • Green Dreams: Green is having a moment in the bathroom – and it’s not just about sustainability. Whether you choose to incorporate green details or go all in with a verdant colour scheme, this trend is all about touches of luxury and sophistication.
  • All Natural: Nature continues to inspire and influence bathroom decor with its soothing earthy shades and tactile materials. Bring a sense of tranquillity and harmony into your space with warm wood, stone finishes and organic textures.
  • Top Tiles: Tiles have always been a top pick for bathrooms – but now they’re taking centre stage as an element that’s both practical and aesthetically pleasing. from bold designs that make a statement to more subtle accents, tiles allow you to fully express your creativity and individuality.
  • Make it Yours: Whether you prefer a sleek, minimalist aesthetic or cosy, eclectic vibes, this trend encourages you to infuse your personality into every aspect of your bathroom design.

And that’s not all! In addition to our super-helpful “shop the look” tips for each of these key trends, we’ve also identified 10 micro trends – specifically in fixtures and fittings – that will bring your bathroom up to date.

My earliest memory of being on holiday was a trip to Scottburgh. This was a big deal to me. Until then, my world had been defined as Benoni-with-the-odd-Boksburg-adventure-to-see-my-gran – but now we were getting into my mom’s VW Beetle and going to visit The Sea. It was 1969, I was three, Janine was a young single mother, and the two of us were off on a great adventure.

My mother still talks about that holiday. As the story goes, the moment we hit the Scottburgh beach, I bolted into the surf shouting, “Hello Big Water!” and, much to Janine’s horror, had to be rescued by vigilant lifeguards. We moved to Cape Town five years later, and her PTSD flared up on any subsequent beach trip.

I hope that you’re reading this bumper issue of VISI on a drama-free holiday of your own, or are at least planning one – because that’s exactly what our focus is this month. Along with a series of features on beautiful, summery homes and our cover story (the evocative Duke’s East camp in the Okavango Delta, p120), we have a special 28-page guide that covers local and international travel. If you’re visiting one of South Africa’s main cities – Joburg, Cape Town or Durbs – there’s a design-curated itinerary of the best places to visit; and if you’re planning an overseas trip, we’ve put together a list of the coolest design-inspired sights in New York, Paris, Berlin, London, Lisbon and Sydney. And since it is the festive season, we also bring you our annual VISI Gift Guide (p70) to help you find fab prezzies for your friends and fam. To narrow things down, we’ve arranged it according to four categories: Luxe, Countrycore, Minimalist and Afromodern.

Here’s to a fun and relaxing festive season – and I hope that, at some point, you get to say hello to the Big Water too.

I’m done with winter. That’s not to say I don’t appreciate the chilly season. It’s a good time to hole up, think, make plans and wear boots … but it seems to have gone on a lot longer than usual this year, right? And I’m tired of lacing up bloody boots. The upside to watching the winter rain repeatedly lash our office windows in the north-wind-driven sheets that have become a new norm in this El Niño-meets-climate change weather pattern is that it’s provided the VISI crew with some time to reflect. And the result of all that contemplation is what you are holding in your hands right now. Or, at least, this is Part 1 of the plan.

To make VISI even more relevant and useful, we’ve shuffled some things around, and added a few more. We’ve moved the Stories section to the front of the magazine. Chunky and content-heavy, with a focus primarily on local design, it better reflects this magazine’s ethos of shining a bright light on our talented creatives. The Vision section, which casts its eyes to trends from the rest of the world, is now the meaty bookend to the mag. As for the new stuff, it’s content that revolves around the ever-growing desire to improve the interiors of our homes.

In this issue, we focus on the most cost-effective way to do that – paint. Nothing can transform an interior space like a new shade of paint, and so we bring you a 32-page Power of Paint section that has everything from the fundamentals of colour to DIY basics, and a colour masterclass from four interior design gurus. But, as I said, this is just Part 1 of the plan – wait until you see what we have in store for you in the next issue…

And there’s more: if haven’t already, have a look at the box below.

There were a number of reasons to visit the recent Decorex shows in Joburg and Cape Town. One of them would’ve been to be at the Future Talks programme that VISI partnered with; another, to witness the wealth of design talent we’re so privileged to have here in South Africa. You could see it in the exhibitors whose locally designed and made furniture, ceramics and fabrics would live comfortably at any global design expo, and you could see it in the multitude of young designers attending the Future Talk presentations and panel discussions.

It’s VISI’s mission to elevate that talent and, frankly, the only difficult part of that endeavour is deciding which designers and architects to feature in our magazine and on our digital channels. In this issue, Wiid Design’s Laurie Wiid Van Heerden invites us inside his Observatory studio for a glimpse at the creative process behind is innovative cork designs. Our Rising Stars are sisters Viveka and Rucita Vassen of Ananta, and their vibrant and uplifting reimagining of traditional craft techniques. Mid- century Modern fans will be delighted to hear that iconic South African furniture brand Frystark has been relaunched; and if you’re looking for some statement wallpaper, check out the playful new collab between Cara Saven Wall Design and multidisciplinary artist Koooooos.

There are, of course, a number of other reasons to read this magazine. In addition to our focus on local design, we also cast our eyes beyond SA’s borders to bring you some international-flavoured inspo. Annemarie was at Salone del Mobile in Milan, and reports back on the “neutral and natural” trends she spotted. We travelled deep into the Rwandan rainforest to visit a spectacular lodge, and there’s a Tropical Modernism- meets-Brutalism Mexican villa that you have to see to believe.

And then my favourite bit: our revisit of ‘80s design. Anything with Memphis Milano in it is obviously going to get my vote.

I’ve been thinking a lot about patina recently. It’s probably because I’m developing one of my own as I navigate through my 50s, but I’m also finding it more and more a factor in the design choices I’m making. Obviously – like my own patinated provenance – these choices indicate a preference for vintage, and if you know me, you’ll know that I do lean towards pre-loved classics. In the past, I’ve been inclined to remove patina and restore these objects to as-close-to-new condition as I could. Whether it’s my ’68 Mercedes or a Facebook Marketplace bargain-find ’70s lamp, I’ve preferred to clean, sand and respray. But I’ve changed.

The change has mostly been in the aesthetics department, though I guess one could argue an existential element that links my advancing years to an appreciation of the marks experience leaves. Whatever the reason, the laboured point here is that I’m appreciating patina more and more. And most recently, with regards to an armchair I’m looking for.

My heart is set on one of (or even one in the style of ) Brazilian designer Percival Lafer’s Mid-century masterpieces. I’ve seen a couple, but they’ve been fully restored – all perfect leather and gleaming dark wood. Compare that to an untouched example whose wood bears one or two honourable nicks and is draped in worn-soft, creased leather, and instead you have a characterful piece that proudly displays its service.

It’s an admittedly nostalgic approach, and it isn’t always the right one – especially when it comes to architecture. Whether they are commercial or residential structures, buildings need to change and adapt to the requirements of modern life. No-one wants to live or work in a museum piece – and to sensitively renovate and refurb is a far more sustainable approach than to demolish and rebuild.

In this issue of VISI, we have some great examples of what I’m talking about. Have a look at architect Vedhant Maharaj’s thoughtful reworking of a 1930s Bauhaus-inspired residence in Parkview (page 112), Icelandic interior designer Rut Káradóttir’s reimagining of a barn in Stokkseyri (page 78), and Robert Silke’s intuitively simple interventions on a forgotten Georgian commercial building in Cape Town’s city centre (page 154).

There are, of course, many other fascinating stories to read in issue #126 of VISI, including a feature on some cool local Instagrammers selling Mid- century furniture (page 158). Obviously, if you guys miraculously happen upon an unrestored Lafer armchair, you know who to call…

Origin fascinates me. It’s the first question that pops into my head when I see a new object – and that can be anything from a painting to a piece of furniture or architecture. What are its roots? What inspired or influenced its creator? I find myself instinctively wanting to understand the context of the object’s creation in order to better appreciate what I’m looking at. It speaks to a fundamental of the creative process too – the fact that we are all really building on what’s gone before. Nothing is profoundly and intrinsically original, but newness comes from adding a layer of your own creativity to an existing body of work.

And I guess that fascination plays out in a lot of the content we do in VISI. It’s why we publish series such as “The Influencers’ Influences”, “Building an Icon”, and the wonderful series Jo Buitendach has been doing on different materials – anything from breeze block to glass, plastic and, in this issue, metal (page 144). It’s also why we also regularly include sympathetically renovated period architectural examples among the homes that we feature.

What I hope all of them do is give context to, and a deeper appreciation of, the considered, clever and beautiful work our contemporary artists, designers and architects are presenting to the world. Plus, of course, it means VISI is more than just something with visual appeal – it’s an engrossing read too.

So for your reading pleasure, along with Jo’s piece mentioned above, learn about how Charles Correa and Ralph Erskine influenced award-winning South African architect Heather Dodd (page 50), get some insight into Tshwane’s majestic Mid-century jewel from Johan Swart (page 164), take in the early ’80s angles of a Pancho Guedes-designed home in Forest Town (page 90), and marvel at a Hans Hallen-designed Modernist masterpiece in Durban (page 78).

You will have noticed a few things on this cover of VISI. We have a new cover design with a tweaked VISI logo, and we recently won a couple of accolades at two international print magazine awards. All of them relate to one person.

For those of you who don’t know Mark Serra, he is VISI’s multitalented creative director, with a career that spans many top local and international magazines, and a signature style that melds a distinctively graphic use of typography with an elegant, pared-back design approach. Given the changes you see and the fact that this is our annual Design Issue, I’m handing Mark the mic for some insights into his process and how he applied it to VISI.

MARK’S DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

“It’s about telling a story. I draw from the personality and essence of a story, and produce an opening visual that encapsulates the vision of the architect, interior decorator, photographer and editor. My approach is always about the ‘wow factor’; it happens by being bold, brave, dynamic and graphic, and complementing this with an even balance of white space. There has to be a tension in all my work, created by the balance of negative and positive space, bold type, shapes and colour.

“Typography has never been just letters to me: they are beautifully crafted shapes; shapes that communicate. How you use them makes all the difference. Typography is my passion – every font has its own personality, and can be manipulated, coloured and distorted to create a beautiful form of communication.”

AND HOW IT’S APPLIED TO VISI

“Designing a magazine is about giving it a personality, authority and consistency, and always keeping the editorial fresh. To me, content trumps design every time, so my role at VISI is to complement the content by giving it another layer. Magazines are designed to a grid – my philosophy is, don’t be afraid to break it!

“VISI is visual splendour, a celebration of brilliant design. It’s the design authority, unashamedly confident in what it showcases. Our content – especially the images – leads my approach to art direction. What we present must always possess an element of surprise, and this filters through in my design. I want to pique our readers’ interest, entertain them, take them on a surprising and wonderful journey. They know that VISI is going to wow them, so it’s important to deliver that dynamic in every issue.”

Welcome to Ed’s Letter improv. The premise: Take three elements from this issue of VISI, and weave them into a mildly amusing personal anecdote. Disa Park, gifts and Star Wars… and go.

Okay… so when my mother and I first moved to Cape Town in the late ’70s, she rented an apartment in the city’s much-maligned but equally loved towers, Disa Park. Much-maligned because, situated at the foot of Devil’s Peak, this misplaced triumvirate has loomed over the City Bowl for more than five decades; but also loved – back then for its modern design, and today for its retro-cool cred.

While it’s the latter that appeals to me now, in the summer of 1977 it was the tennis and squash courts,
the huge swimming pool, and the covered concrete parking levels with spiralled car access that made for brilliant skateboarding. Basically, Disa Park was the perfect playground for an eight-year- old boy who, until then, had been living in a basement flat in Benoni.

The great gift I got that first Christmas in Cape Town was a big white polystyrene surfboard taller than my person… and I adored it. The very next day, with the board’s nose peeking out of the back window of Janine’s tiny yellow Fiat 124, we headed off to Camps Bay to embark on what would surely be the start of a career in surfing.

Unfortunately, the combination of my blind excitement and her overprotective sensibilities meant that I paddled a little too far out for my mother’s liking. She panicked, running up and down the beach, yelling for me to come back in. Humiliated, my surfboard and I were driven straight back home to Disa Park, where she promptly sawed the board in half with a bread knife. She figured that if it was only half the size, I would only be able to paddle out half as far.

A few days later, as compensation for what she now realised was a rather rash act, Janine took me to see the new movie showing at the Gardens Centre (yes, GC had a movie theatre back then). It was called Star Wars, and to this day it remains my favourite movie in the whole world. When I turned 35, I bought myself a proper surfboard, and learnt to surf.

You can read architect Robert Silke’s fascinating story of Disa Park on page 140, peruse our fabulously eclectic gift guide on page 128, and find out more about a couple of Star Wars-inspired Koreans on page 164.

VISI is teaming up with local designers to create a range of stylish and exclusive products for you and your home. Here are some of our favourites, all of which are currently available through the VISI shop.

Concrete Studio & Skinny laMinx Coasters

Playing and having fun creating patterns has always been at the heart of Heather Moore’s Skinny laMinx brand. “After spotting the patterns I generated during my #100daysofpattern challenge last year, Charmaine Nolte of Concrete Studio approached me about producing a range of concrete tile designs,” says Heather. And so a collaboration between the two brands formed and a range of fun tiles was launched.

Fast forward a few months and the idea behind the tile range was transferred to coasters. Our limited edition concrete coasters come in four different patterns and add a pop of colour to any table.

African Jacquard Flamboyant Wraps

These new vibrant African Jacquard Flamboyant Wraps are named after and inspired by the magnificent red Flamboyant Tree. Christine, the founder of African Jacquard, first laid eyes on the Flamboyant Tree many years ago when she lived in Gabon and was enchanted by its rich red.

Featuring a range of bold hues and woven with 100% African cotton, these versatile large wraps are perfect for year-round wear; whether you’re layering up in winter or shielding yourself from the sun in summer. The ultimate luxe local gift!

Appropriately, I’m sitting in my kitchen typing this. I always leave my editor’s note until last…

I shouldn’t. I should know better. I’ve been writing them for the best part of two decades now, but, inevitably, our managing editor has to send me an email with “Urgent: Editor’s letter copy” in the subject line. (Sorry Sammy!)

So here I am at the table, in the warmest room in our house on a chilly early spring afternoon, the plum tree’s budding blossoms and the Virginia creeper’s sprouting leaves visible through the windows. To add to the appropriateness of the situation, it’s the room in our house next on the list for a refurb.

Like I’m sure it has for many of you over the past couple of years, for us the pandemic’s lockdown and new home/office hybrid working schedule has meant that we’ve looked at our home with a fresh eye, being inspired to spruce up, re-style and redecorate. Exterior walls, tick… Bedrooms, tick… Living area, tick… Next, the kitchen.

In this special edition of VISI magazine, we’ve got some great ideas and inspiration to help you redesign what is very likely the centre of your home – that place where your family and friends congregate to prepare meals, eat and spend quality time together. Whether you want to revitalise or completely redesign your kitchen, we’ve compiled an issue that can both inspire and be a helpful resource, showcasing the latest kitchen trends – including outdoor kitchens – providing expert advice on creating a timeless kitchen, and introducing you to really clever storage solutions.
