No other room in your home influences your lifestyle as much as a kitchen does.

Whether large or small, the kitchen has become an oasis among the modern, busy lives we all lead. Where it was once merely a place where food was prepared, it’s now as much the centre of your family’s day-to-day living – cooking, eating and socialising – as it is an expression of your own taste in decor and design. With a cup of tea or coffee, your day probably begins here and will likely end here too, preparing the evening’s meal … and that means having a kitchen space that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing is key to how you experience your home.

Whether you are looking to spruce it up or completely redesign your kitchen, in this special issue, the VISI team has compiled the ideal resource to begin that exciting journey. From the latest design trends and appliances, to some of our favourite kitchens seen in the pages of VISI, this special edition will inspire your dream kitchen.

We’re still at home.

As we speak, I’m typing away sitting at our living room table with my constant companion at the other end during these past lockdown months – my teenager – doing her matric schoolwork. That makes it the second issue of VISI done remotely… and it also marks the second wave of home-improvements for the Smith household.

It’s been a thing, right Sounds like everyone has spent a large part of lockdown thinking of ways to re-imagine, revamp, and redo their homes.

For us, it’s mostly been about colour – an instinctive response, I guess, to the sameness of lockdown. Wave One was more of a painting and artwork thing. From a blank-canvas white, one wall got painted pink and another grey… and that resulted in a major rehang of our art collection.

We started to grow things too. A bunch of new indoor plants provided a softer, greener accent and, out the back, lettuce and spinach grown in big clay pots have been both plentiful and delicious. And then things got serious. Cue a major chuck out. We owned way too many things.

Clothes, bedding, and boxes of assorted “stuff ” got donated to charity. A big old white chalk-painted teak cupboard was sold on Facebook marketplace and replaced with a bright yellow Pederson + Lennard server below a newly installed skylight. Suggestions were even made (but politely declined) that I should sell one of my bicycles. The end result is a brighter, greener and less cluttered Cape Town City Bowl cottage that has not only been a fun and cost-effective project, but has made lockdown a bit more bearable. No doubt you have your version of that and I trust VISI once again provides some inspiration for what to do next.

We’re coming at you from two angles in this issue. Both are part of a thread resonating around the globe as, perhaps for the first time in human history, we are all genuinely thinking about our future on this planet.

The notion that unless we change things, we might not actually have a future has moved from fringe activism to the collective zeitgeist. It’s even moved into our second bedroom. I have a very woke teenage daughter. So, as both a nod to key design and architectural trends, and an attempt at some hard-to-come-by Dad Points, issue VISI 106 looks at:

SMALL SPACES Along with the fact that owning property has become less and less affordable in major urban areas, there’s been a conscious move to making do with less. Small spaces compel us to live with less clutter, simplify our lives, and reduce our carbon footprints. In this issue we look at some exceptional contemporary local designs and, in the case of the Holyrood apartment block (page 78), one 80-year-old example. Quite coincidentally, it turns out the VISI team has a connection with this Art Deco gem. Our deputy editor Annemarie Meintjes happened to have lived there with her now ex-husband. “So many stories,” she says with a twinkle in her eye … and my own grandparents stayed there for six months just after my grandad returned from the war in 1945.

SUSTAINABILITY From local brand Sealand Gear and its very cool upcycled bags, to iconic Portuguese ceramic brand Bordallo Pinheiro and its new Amazônia collection that contributes to reforesting the Amazon, a bicycle made of recycled Nespresso pods, and Jaguar’s new emission-free I-Pace electric vehicle, our Reasons section has a strong sustainability theme. Yes, sustainability is about as buzzwordy as it gets, but it’s genuinely beginning to seep into the way I live my life. I know – woke teenager, etc – but if it can shift the perspective of this set-in-his-ways 50-year-old, I’d like to think it’s happening to a lot of people.

VISI 104 IS HERE https://visi.co.za/visi-104-is-here/ Mon, 23 Sep 2019 06:00:16 +0000 https://visi.co.za/?p=581074 In your hands is 104, a new-look VISI. And, yes, it may have some changes, but also much that remains untouched. Our commitment to showcasing the finest South African and African architecture, design and decor continues, as does an unwavering approach to the best photography and writing.

Here’s the thing: With our esteemed Editor-in-Chief, Sumien Brink, on sabbatical, who wouldn’t jump at the chance to edit South Africa’s pre-eminent architecture, design and decor mag, right? But then again, VISI is a bona fide print icon, revered by its readers – and most of that is thanks to Sumien’s vision and impeccable taste. It’s a big mag and those are some big, big shoes.

I said yes, obviously … but that what-have-I-said-yes-to moment followed hot on its heels. Luckily it was one soon eased by the combined knowledge and expertise of the VISI team – one that represents an amazing mix of editorial excellence, deep experience, contemporary insights, and a finger on the pulse of local and international design. It also coincided with a fresh hand on the iMac’s mouse and our new creative director has brought a subtle elegance and detail to VISI’s design DNA that both enhances the copy and allows the images to sing. I call it cool design. He calls it “a deconstructed motif that’s a mix of modern-meets-traditional”.

As part of that new look and feel, we’ve also added a weightier opening section called “VISIon” that will be all about the objects, people, spaces and places that inspire us (and, we hope, you). Plus, as part of our featured houses/hotels/lodges, we’ve also included what we’ve taken to calling a “space with soul.” It may belong to an artist – as our first one on page 82 does – or it may be a wonderful example of a particular architectural style, but they will all be quirky, original and, most importantly, have that unique provenance of a space that’s been lived in.

So … In your hands is 104, a new-look VISI. And, yes, it may have some changes, but also much that remains untouched. Our commitment to showcasing the finest South African and African architecture, design and decor continues, as does an unwavering approach to the best photography and writing.

We’ve genuinely had a great time putting together this summer-flavoured issue and I hope that shines through. Let me know what you think.

The 2018 Holiday Issue is here!

It’s usually around this time that we’re able to look back on the past 12 months and boast about the awards VISI has garnered, and this year I’m proud to say we won big! Ahead of our much-anticipated 100th issue, VISI was named the winner of the international A’Design Award for Best Design Media in Italy. Nominated by designers, artists and architects from around the globe, it is a special recognition granted to leading design publications.

What makes this award special is that it gets presented to a publication only once to acknowledge its role and support in the creation of a better world and its understanding of how good design leads to better products and services. Much of VISI’s design perspective was conceived by our former Art Director Anton Pietersen, who has recently taken up new career challenges. Here’s to the talented Anton and to the brilliant VISI team who constantly push the boundaries.

After the tumultuous year we’ve had, I think it’s time for a good break. It’s time to relax and enjoy the wonderful holiday options we have right here on the southern tip of Africa: from glamping on the West Coast to breathtaking holiday homes that won architectural awards on the East Coast, from a beautifully designed safari lodge in Mpumalanga that rests lightly on the earth to an inspired new restaurant in Joburg where David Higgs and his partners are making magic, and from a remarkable new winery in Devon Valley near Stellenbosch that perfectly marries African and European sensibilities to a family Christmas celebration in the Swartland, whatever your preference, I think we have it covered.

And then there are lots and lots to win! There’s a Miele K 20.000 fridge-freezer, worth R29 999, with a blackboard finish on the door, a sun lounger from WAZ Outdoor, Champagne, books, calendars from Babylonstoren and Le Creuset sets in a new metallic finish…

We hope your holiday is a long and relaxing one so you can start 2019 recharged and ready for what VISI has in store for our big 1-0-0!

– Sumien
