British fashion designer Christopher Kane has collaborated with The Rug Company on his inaugural collection of five hand-made rugs and a cushion.

The collection includes the Wave and Grid Construct rugs that play with a combination of wavy patterns and straight lines, the Filigree rug, the Botanical Anatomy rugs (available in two colourways) and the Botanical Anatomy cushion.

The hand-knotted, raised silk Filigree rugs, rich in texture and dimension, feature interlocked graphic motifs, while the Botanical Anatomy rugs, available in grey and nude, are inspired by biology and botanical illustrations. New York-based fashion designer Thom Browne has extended his talents to interiors, designing an intricate series for The Rug Company.

The Rug Company is known for collaborating with famed fashion designers, including Vivienne Westwood, Elie Saab, Tom Dixon and the late Alexander McQueen. The most recent collaboration sees the brand turning to Thom Browne, whose work, says Christopher Sharp, co-founder of The Rug Company, is a natural fit in the world of decor.

“We’ve been admirers of Thom and his work for many years. We knew his work would translate strongly into interiors. The rugs he has designed, in a similar way to his clothes, have a clarity and personality that make them both desirable and impactful.”

The series features two designs, both of which have been hand-knotted using Tibetan wool and silk. The Cable Knit pattern, available in Grey and White, is inspired by a traditional Aran jersey and required The Rug Company’s team of weavers in Nepal to master a complicated new carving technique. The predominantly grey Repp Stripe rug, which takes its cues from the classic repp tie, features diagonally woven silk stripes.

The Rug Company is celebrating its 20th anniversary with TRC20, a capsule collection of hand-knotted designer rugs.

Leading design houses Paul Smith, Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood, Kelly Wearstler and Suzanne Sharp have all contributed to the collection.

Each piece is woven entirely by hand with the use of age-old weaving techniques and refined natural yarns. The range includes Chiaroscuro by Alexander McQueen, which comes in a limited edition of 40 pieces made from handwoven aubusson wool.

The collection also includes hand-knotted Tibetan wool pieces such as the Bonavita by Suzanne Sharp, the Highland by Vivienne Westwood, the Festival by Paul Smith and Channels Copper by Kelly Wearstler, which is made from both hand-knotted Tibetan wool and silk.

The rugs, and photography of the designers in their creative spaces by artist Mary McCartney, will be on display at an exhibition during the London Design Festival from 16 – 24 September 2017.
