Created using Future Felt, a material made from recycled plastic bottles, local sustainable brand The Joinery has launched a new multifunctional homeware collection.

The homeware range, launched alongside the office and tech range, includes placemats, coasters and storage containers. “We really spent time trying to make this range multifunctional with many of our new products,” says Co-founders and Directors Natalie and Kim Ellis. “Items like storage baskets can double up as a planter.”

In keeping with the times, this range fits well into the lifestyle shift that is the “new normal”, doing more with less, while still being innovative. “Having a range that has a multi-use element means items can be swapped around to get a fresh look, like swapping out the office storage basket to style kitchen utensils when entertaining guests.”

Pairing their love of design with their love for the planet means The Joinery team gets to make products that not only contribute to growing eco design but also contribute to creating real change in empowering marginalised communities. Every creation at The Joinery is environmentally conscious and created by local artisans in informal settlements in Cape Town.

“We are feeling positive for the future of eco design,” says Natalie and Kim. “Having been operating since 2011, The Joinery has been lucky to have been at the forefront of sustainable design since our inception.”

Zeitz MOCAA has released a series of 3D virtual tours on its website. The museum has also made a series of audio tours available, with insights from architects, curators and artists.

Carrol Boyes and local ethical and sustainable design brand The Joinery have combined forces to create a collaborative community collection.

The new range of felt tote bags and pouches are made from recycled plastic bottles with imagery of well-known Carrol Boyes sculpture artworks illustrated on the front.

“With waste in the oceans and landfills reaching epic proportions there has never been a more crucial time to find alternatives to single-use plastic and explore the potential of proactive change through design,” explains The Joinery on Instagram.

All of the products are locally made and designed by artisans and sewing co-ops based in and around Cape Town, furthering upliftment and community development.

The tote bags retail for R795 each and the pouches for R495 each.

Owned by sisters Natalie and Kim Ellis, The Joinery is a Cape Town-based brand committed to the production of ethical luxury fashion and lifestyle items.

The brand’s collection of sustainable products consists of a wide range of designs, from laptop bags, luggage tags and totes to iPad sleeves, notebooks and passport holders.

The grey material used throughout this range has the appearance of felt, but is made from recycled plastic bottles. “Saving plastic from landfills allows us to create beautiful, upcycled products and apparel,” says the duo on their website.

The leather accents make use of sustainably sourced or vegetable leather. Eco fabrics such Tencel, Linen, Rayon and Hemp are used in the production of the products wherever possible, as well as fibres grown without toxic pesticides and synthetic fertilisers.

All of the pieces are handmade to order by up-skilled local artisans in Cape Town.

The Joinery received the 2017 PETCO Award for Best Product using recycled PET, as well as an Eco-Logic Award for Eco Innovation.
