The quickest way to compromise a beautiful space in 2026 is to tile for approval rather than intention.

Copy‑and‑paste interiors have had their day. Artificial intelligence has flooded feeds with derivative ideas. The future centres on authenticity, personal taste, longevity, quality and self‑trust.

South African tile specialist Stiles pulls apart some of the major trends that drove style decisions over the last decade and describes a new, evergreen view reshaping design in 2026.

“We’re leaning away from sameness and into spaces with soul,” says Stiles CEO Stevie Joubert, “homes that feel lived in, not staged”. At Stiles, that means discernment: choosing surfaces that reference nature, finishes that age gracefully and products made with sustainability and quality at the centre. “Trends are temporary, true style has staying power,” says Joubert.

Stark white minimalism is out

Steer clear of a clinical look. Design is moving away from surgical‑theatre tiling towards matt textures and warmer tones.

If you like a minimalist aesthetic but want to avoid anything sterile, consider large‑format, earth‑toned tiles. The Continental Sand tile  is a versatile neutral. This 1 222mm × 1 222mm tile has a concrete look and a practical matt finish. It’s part of a complete range for indoor and outdoor applications, including slip‑resistant tiles, pavers and a decorative textured tile.

Quality over cheap and basic

Scrollable temptation is real, but impulse buys often disappoint. This is the year to steer clear of mass‑produced, low‑cost, high‑regret options.

Take a tip from fashionista, Vivienne Westwood: “Buy less, choose well, make it last.”

2026 is about investment materials and sustainability, with premium quality as the real statement. Choose pieces that age beautifully and last for decades.

In this conversation with @mrphoenixgrey, the designers discuss the beauty of a stone sink. In 2026, look out for stone‑look porcelain slabs that go beyond floors and walls. Slabs can be sculpted into sinks, islands, vanities, shower benches, tables and furniture‑like joinery.

View the Florim range at Stiles for interesting marble‑look and rare‑stone‑effect porcelain slabs. Porcelain’s durability also makes it one of the most sustainable building materials for modern homes: you won’t need to replace it for decades.

Texture takes the lead

Texture is the new therapy. Three‑dimensional surfaces bring depth and movement. Fluted, ribbed, pleated, embossed and reeded finishes create light‑and‑shadow drama. Consider smaller formats with relief surfaces such as the Matiz fluted tiles, the Cuore My C Deluxe ribbed tiles and the Funky Tiles Arrow Kit Kats.

Larger formats include the marble‑look Monaco White tile, the fluted Terrazzo Satin and the Escama Brie tile with a raised chevron texture.

Edges matter in 2026, with a return to tile borders – and trims on just about everything: piping and fringing on furniture, tassels on cushions, pleats on curtains and mouldings on walls.

Add instant character and personalisation by creating a bespoke boarder using the Zoe tiles in stripes and checkers.

Minimalism, reconsidered

Architect and designer John Pawson is often described as the King of Minimalism. His own home, Life House in rural Wales, is the purest expression of the philosophy, a place of “perfectly proportioned rooms stripped to their essentials”. Life House is intended to reveal “the excitement of empty space.”

That kind of quiet can be beautiful in its context. But in 2026, minimalism can feel less like refinement and more like retreat. We’re fatigued by homes that look good online but feel hollow in real life.

In a contest between minimalism and mood, mood wins every time.

Think playful, soulful interiors that tell the truth: personal art collections, musical instruments leaning casually in the corner, photographic portraits, heirlooms, handcrafted objects, whimsical decor and those unexpected details that make a space feel alive.

Lenny Kravitz’s opulent Parisian home, Hôtel de Roxy, is the perfect example. Described as a space of “soulful elegance”, it is layered with memory, artistry and atmosphere.

The message is clear: the future of style isn’t empty. It’s expressive. It’s textured. It’s storytelling, built on warmth and materiality, with wood grain, raised patterns, stone‑inspired surfaces, bold design and surfaces chosen to age beautifully.

The most compelling homes are never showrooms. They’re personal signatures.

Stiles believe tiles should feel considered, personal and quietly confident – chosen not for a season, but for a lifetime of living. View the collection online at stiles.co.za.

The Ventures Foundation by Sanlam Private Wealth is a platform to discover, develop and accelerate South Africa’s brightest design entrepreneurs.

Design that endures is born from precision, patience and partnerships that value both artistry and enterprise. The Ventures Foundation by Sanlam Private Wealth is built on this ethos – empowering a new generation of designers to step onto the global stage and make Africa’s quiet luxury impossible to ignore.

This initiative is more than a design competition. The Ventures Foundation is a platform to discover, develop and accelerate South Africa’s most promising creative entrepreneurs – designers with the potential to translate distinctive vision into sustainable, global brands.

‘Designing investment portfolios is as much a craft as it is a science – measured, meticulous and deeply personal,’ says Theesan Moodley, CEO of Sanlam Private Wealth. ‘The Ventures Foundation extends this discipline into design entrepreneurship. When creative excellence is paired with business mentorship and global exposure, the result is lasting impact.’

How it works

Twelve emerging designers will be selected for a series of masterclasses focused on both creative excellence and business capability. Five will go on to receive intensive, tailored mentorship – from pricing and production to branding and market access.

One finalist will join a mentor at Maison&Objet in Paris, one of the world’s top design fairs, to engage with global brands, gain international insights and build connections.

A brief for Africa’s quiet luxury

Applicants are invited to design a luxury textile piece – prototyped as a rug – that reimagines African luxury. Here, luxury is not about excess, but restraint: timeless design, refined craftsmanship and mastery of the material. The review lens is equally focused on entrepreneurial potential – clear ambition, and readiness to scale.

Why it matters now

Across Africa, design is becoming a powerful economic force. Studios are weaving sustainability, provenance and innovation into products with global appeal. But the journey to scale remains tough. Access to capital, networks and international markets is limited. Competing globally requires more than creativity – it requires a strategy.

The Ventures Foundation narrows this gap by combining Sanlam Private Wealth’s expertise in managing global portfolios and cross‑border complexity with mentorship from creative leaders who’ve built globally respected brands. This is practical support, not just inspiration.

Mentors and partners

The expert panel brings together leaders across design, business and creative entrepreneurship: Tracy Lee Lynch (Clout/SA), Laurie Wiid van Heerden (Wiid Design), Mpho Vackier (TheUrbanative), Zizipho Poswa (Imiso), Charl Edwards (Lookbook Studios) and business strategist Claude Morris, alongside Sanlam Private Wealth’s own investment expertise represented by Lentsoane Lekalakala.

The Craft & Design Institute (CDI) joins as development partner, drawing on decades of experience supporting creative enterprises into new markets.

For creative entrepreneurs

If you have a studio, a distinct point of view and some recognition, but you’re still building global reach, this is an opportunity to shift from creating stand-out pieces to shaping a resilient brand.

For contributors

If you believe that wealth includes cultural legacy, not just capital, the Ventures Foundation offers a chance to support the next wave of African talent – through mentorship, funding or access.

When you think of timeless furniture that blends natural beauty with authentic craftsmanship, Malawian cane furniture truly stands out. Each piece tells a unique story – not only of artistry and tradition but also of the rural communities in Malawi whose livelihoods are sustained through this remarkable craft.

The Origins of Malawian Cane Furniture

Malawian cane furniture is handcrafted using indigenous rattan cane, harvested and woven by local, skilled artisans. The craft dates back generations, passed down within families and villages. What makes it unique is its authentic, handwoven style, instantly recognisable by its intricate patterns and organic forms. No two pieces are ever exactly the same – a reflection of the artisan’s individual touch, and personal style.

A Sustainable and Authentic Craft

The use of cane makes this furniture a sustainable choice. Cane is a fast-growing natural material that requires minimal processing, making it eco-friendly and durable.

Malawi Cane Collection

Impact on Malawian Communities

Behind every chair, sofa, or table is a story of empowerment. For communities in Malawi, cane weaving is more than just tradition – it is a source of livelihood and independence.

  • Employment opportunities: Cane furniture production creates jobs for men and women across villages.
  • Skills preservation: By passing the weaving techniques down to younger generations, artisans ensure that this cultural heritage lives on.
  • Economic empowerment: The income earned from cane furniture enables families to access education, healthcare, and improved living conditions.

At its heart, Malawian cane furniture represents a cycle of impact: when you purchase a piece, you’re supporting entire communities and helping to uplift rural economies.

Malawi Cane Collection

Why Malawian Cane Furniture Matters Today

In a world leaning toward mass-produced, factory-made products, Malawian cane stands out as an authentic alternative. It offers something rare – furniture with a soul, made by hand, with care, and with a purpose.

The Malawi Cane Collection: Sharing Malawi’s Story At Malawi Cane Collection, we are passionate about sharing this incredible craft with the world. By sourcing directly from artisans and communities in Malawi, we ensure that every piece carries its authentic heritage while helping to create sustainable opportunities for local families. Whether it’s a statement chair, a dining set, or custom-made pieces, Malawian cane brings a touch of African artistry into homes, hotels, and resorts across the world.

Malawi Cane Collection

When you choose Malawian Cane from Malawi Cane Collection, you’re not just choosing beautiful, handwoven furniture – you’re helping to support a tradition that empowers communities and preserves cultural craftsmanship. It really is an incredible story of Malawian Cane Furniture.

Our visit to Malawi this August, was inspiring, endearing but also eye-opening – these communities are so reliant on their craft as a stable source of income.

At Malawi Cane Collection, we specialise in crafting and exporting high-quality African Cane Furniture that blends traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design. Based in Cape Town, South Africa, we partner with skilled artisans to produce durable, stylish, and eco-friendly pieces using locally sourced natural cane and rattan.

We exist to celebrate Africa’s artisanal heritage while creating sustainable livelihoods. Every purchase supports community upliftment, fair work practices, and the preservation of time-honoured weaving techniques.

Horizon, the latest outdoor collection by Weylandts, with its smoke-finished teak, woven-rope detailing and sculpted curves, speaks of landscapes and time, inviting outdoor living that is generous, adaptable and enduring.

Founded in contrast, the materials and textures in the latest Weylandts Outdoor Collection are a metaphor for harmony and balance. Through this opposition, beauty is created. The tension of the sun disappearing behind the horizon line, the jagged mountain’s edge that frames a valley, the refreshing dusk air that cools the soil after a sweltering day – that is where beauty rests.

Chris and Anna Weylandt share a heritage of design and a passion for connection. Designing each piece with long-standing suppliers as they travel through vast lands, their creative process is about more than the beauty of the pieces they create, it is about the relationships they build and the intimate knowledge they have of each material, texture, and meaning. A unique place where raw forms collide with bold designs, Weylandts is an alchemy of global ideas and local roots.

Smoke finishes on hand-selected pieces of teak, rich in oil and confident in grain, mimic the mountain curves through rigid frames. These elemental pieces are designed by Weylandts to age with the land – weathering and wearing to show the markings of their journeys.

This season also introduces new modular sofa ranges – the Paloma and Havana – designed for both outdoors and in. Generously proportioned and deeply inviting, these pieces embody the collection’s spirit of natural ease and adaptability.

Woven rope details evoke unreplicable patterns of veining leaves and indigenous thicket. Crafted to withstand and hold, these pieces carry the stories of their craft in between intertwined strands.

Complementing these ranges are their new loungers, sculpted in shape and scale, designed for languid afternoons and sun-drenched pauses. Their proportions and gentle curves echo the undulating lines of the horizon itself – relaxed, grounded, and timeless.

“I’ve seen many horizons in my life. From Indonesia to Namibia, they inspire me to think bigger. That’s how I wanted this collection to feel. Like a beautiful moment in time.” – Chris Weylandt.

Extending Leoni Smit’s acclaimed Masculus – The Male DomainTussen Mure is a contemplative kykNET series exploring South Africa’s design language.

Tussen Mure emerges from the world first shaped in Masculus – The Male Domain, the celebrated seven-kilogram coffee-table publication created by photographic director and author Leoni Smit as a meditation on interiors, masculinity and psychological space. Smit’s vision is completed through the lens of photographer Yvette Jordaan and the graphic-design mastery of Sirette Hare – together crafting a visual exploration that is exacting, contemplative and deeply symbolic.

While Masculus is anchored in stillness, Tussen Mure shifts the lens into motion. The new television series explores the human dimension behind designed environments — revealing men not as archetypes, but as expressive, living subjects within rooms that shape and reflect their internal worlds.

Directed by Elmi De Pauw, the series captures spontaneous moments: a shift in posture, a private smile, the emotional texture between a man and the environment he inhabits. Elmi’s intuitive directing turns interiors into intimate stages, where character and space engage in a quiet, unforced dialogue.

Masculus – The Male Domain

Co-presenter Eugene Coetzee, founder of Eugene Coetzee Décor & Design Consultants, brings his own interpretive eye to the relationship between objects, mood, personality and identity. A devoted collector of books, he views each publication as a living character. “When I first encountered Masculus, I immediately imagined its energy in movement. Books have personalities — colours, moods, identities. Film becomes their movement.”

Smit echoes this sentiment through her own long-held philosophy. “Coffee table books are meant to be seen,” she says. “They live openly — bold, large, unapologetic. Film doesn’t replace the book; it breathes alongside it.”

She deepens this further with her conceptual understanding of the collaboration: “André Blazin remarked that literature is conceptual and interpretive, whereas film is ontological, rooted in physical reality. I write the voice-overs for the series, and the imagery that accompanies the words shows what the words suggest. Photography and film are complementary — a synthesis of each other.”

Produced by Walla Films with the support of iFX Brokers, Tussen Mure is an exploration of South Africa’s design language through story, personality, mood, and place. The thirteen-part Series runs from October 2025 to January 2026 on kykNET (DStv 144), with episodes also available on DStv Stream and Catch Up.

Ultimately, Tussen Mure studies the lives carried within walls — the laughter, the stillness, and the human honesty that remains long after a room falls silent.
