The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has revealed the buildings, including two from SA, that are in the running for the prestigious architecture award, the RIBA International Prize.

The biennial award celebrates the world’s best new buildings completed in the past two years that exemplify “design excellence, architectural ambition and delivering meaningful social impact”.

The 2018 International List features 62 projects from around the world, more than double the number selected for the inaugural prize in 2016. It includes the “Empower Shack” in Khayelitsha, by Urban Think Tank in collaboration with ETH Zurich and NGO Ikhayalami, and the iconic Zeitz MOCAA, designed by Heatherwick Studio.

“The RIBA International List 2018 shines a light on the world’s best new buildings and most impressive architectural talent,” said RIBA President, Ben Derbyshire. “Most importantly, this significant selection of 62 projects illustrates the meaningful impact and transformative quality that well-designed buildings can have on communities, wherever they are in the world.”

Attracting 620 entries from over 60 countries, the final 20 winners of the Restaurant and Bar Design Awards were announced at a ceremony held at the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) in London last month. 

The Best Restaurant title was awarded to A Cantina (Spain) by Estudio Nomada, followed by the Best Bar title winner, Graffiti (Bulgaria) by Studio Mode. Other winners were announced in various other regions and categories, including Best Pop up Restaurant, Best Pub and Best Standalone Restaurant.

The adjudication panel included design director Alberto Alessi, Taschen editor Julius Weddeman, American artist Matthew Clarke and Casa Vogue’s Taissa Buesco, alongside 19 other prestigious designers, architects and hospitality personalities.

The main criteria was to reward entrants for design excellence. Said the Brazilian magazine editor-in-chief, Taissa: “Design excellence is based on deep research. Research of forms, materials, techniques, colours, finishings, details. Research of design history and its professionals. Research of different cultures and traditions. Research of human beings and their needs. In a quest for a never-seen-before-design, somehow innovative, that contributes to the evolution of the design world.”
