On an unseasonably hot August day in Krugersdorp, VISI readers tucked into chilled Graham Beck Brut and delicious chocolate cake as they joined us, in association with Saint-Gobain, at Nirox Sculpture Park for a tour of the POD-iDLADLA, a pre-fabricated home designed for efficient and cost-effective living.

Deputy editor Annemarie Meintjes was joined by architect Clara da Cruz Almeida from Collaborate000 to discuss the motivation behind the POD project – also revealing – for the first time – the pricing of the various POD options available.

A key drive for Clara is collaboration, and for this project, she decided to team up with the talented Katy Taplin and Adriaan Hugo of Dokter and Misses. Both were at the tour to talk readers through the detailing of the POD’s interiors and the unique functionalities required for built-in furniture in a small space.

Readers left with the latest issue of VISI, a bottle of Graham Beck Brut and the inspiration to think big about small spaces!

A collaborative project between architect Clara da Cruz Almeida of Collaborate000 and interior and product designers Dokter + Misses was just launched at Sanlam Handmade Contemporary FoodWineDesign Fair in Joburg.

Locally designed and manufactured, the iDladla / lifePOD is a “modular, prefabricated nano-home” designed to challenge existing outlooks on urban and sustainable living solutions in Southern Africa.

The idea behind this compact 17sqm structure is that it will use minimal resources (thereby lowering costs) and create a convenient, comfortable and functional space for homeowners.

While each singular unit can be customised to the individual homeowner’s specifications, due to its modular nature, it’s also possible to combine more than one unit to create a larger property.

While the cost of a unit hasn’t been finalised yet, the team currently estimates that it could cost between R200 000 and R700 000 per unit.
